So I have a DS, and I'm wishing it could do more
It can! People all the time tell me how they wish they could play music on their Lite's or watch movies on their DSi's or browse the web... Hell, the psp can do it, why can't I?
Well to be honest with you, if you know what you're doing, you won't ever want a lame ass PSP anymore, trust me. Follow my guide and you'll be able to:
- Use your DS like an iPod (watching movies, listening to mp3's)
- Play Nintendo DS roms (but only download roms of games you actually own)
- Emulate your old favorites and play them on your DS (like super nintendo games, sega genesis games to name a few)
- Read e-books on your DS
- Browse and use an extensive list of homebrew applications and games such as:
- An internet browser (very convenient and easy to use because of the touchscreen)
- An msn messenger client (yes, you can actually instant message people)
- A photo editing program (and it's awesome!)
- Quake (yes, the original PC game ported to the DS)
- And so much more....!
Getting Started
Okay, in order to make all of this a reality, you're going to have to acquire just a few things:
- Assuming you already have a DS, you're going to need a flashcard for booting homebrew, I recommend the M3i Zero, it's hands-down the best flashcard available. There are some other flash cards available, such as the R4, AceKard, Supercard DSTwo, and G6. These are also cheap and work in a similar fashion. My guide focuses on the M3i Zero, but all flash cards are designed to do the same thing, have fun!
- You'll need a micro SDHC card, I recommend that you purchase one of the ones listed below due to their high performance and low cost. These are the ones I personally use and they work perfectly for all my homebrew and media needs on my DSi.
- You'll need a micro SDHC card reader. If you purchase one of the micro SDHC cards below, it will come with one, so don't even worry about this.
- Obviously, you're going to need a computer to download files and transfer files to the micro SDHC card.

Setting up your m3i zero for your DS Lite or DSi
- You'll need to download the latest m3i zero firmware.
- You're going to need to download the F_CORE.DAT, but only if you have a DSi or DSi XL. If so, go to the system settings and see which firmware you have. Refer to this page and download the appropriate F_CORE.DAT for your firmware version.
- Extract the contents of the m3i zero firmware to the root of your micro sdhc card. If you don't have an extraction tool, download 7zip, its free and easy to use. After you install it, just right click the rar file you downloaded and click extract with 7zip.
- Also extract the F_CORE.rar and Place "F_CORE.DAT" on the root of your micro SDHC card, just like you did with the "SYSTEM" folder.
- Make sure you have the "system" folder and "F_CORE.DAT" on the root of your micro sdhc card and insert that into the slot on your m3i
- There was a USB cable that came in the m3i package. You'll need to plug the thin strip end of that into your m3i. Use the picture to the right as a reference, it has to be done exactly like that. Plug the USB end of the cable into your computer. A light in your m3i will start to blink. When it is done blinking, unplug everything, your m3i is ready to use. If your m3i did not blink when it was plugged into the computer, you did something wrong, format your micro SDHC card and repeat steps 1-6
- Insert the m3i into your DS and turn it on!
- Upon booting your m3i for the first time, you'll be presented with two options in the form of rectangles: click "m3 sakura" on the left. There will be some options to configure, including the language specification. These should be self explanatory. You may now hide the "SYSTEM" folder and the F_CORE.DAT, so that you don't have to see them when you add files to your m3i or when you are using it.
- You can also the change the appearance of your m3i, or the GUI (graphical user interface) by clicking on the "system" folder and then clicking on the "m3sakura" folder. There will be a few files in this folder with the extension ".skn". Clicking on one of these .skn files will change the theme of your m3i. You can also download more skins online.
Movies and Music on your m3i
If the only reason you got into this whole thing was to be able to play music on your DS, congrats! You're done. Simply drag and drop mp3 files from your computer to any location on your micro SDHC card and your DS will play them, because it has a built in media player. There are homebrew programs available that will play music, but with the m3i zero you simply don't need them.

Nintendo DS roms
You can drag and drop nintendo DS roms to your microsd card and play them on your DS. These backups run just like the real thing. However, you are only supposed to have backups if you own the real game. Using a backup copy of a game you don't actually own is illegal and you could get in serious trouble. That being said, here are some good sites to get some NDS roms from:
- Romulation
- Rom Freaks
- And hey, there's always torrents, haha!
Always make sure you are downloading the USA (NTSC) version of your roms. Other regions will work as well, but they'll either be in Japanese or they won't work as well. Although I've used European (PAL) versions of roms and they haven't given me any trouble yet.

Homebrew!!
Homebrew is anything user-made. For example, coders have created media players, GPS's, coloring apps, instant messaging like MSN and AOL, and emulators, etc. There is a HUGE COMMUNITY dedicated to providing homebrew applications and games. Here a couple good sites to get homebrew from:

It's basically a commercial.
Because at this point in the game, the whole process of hacking your DS has become much more streamlined. You no longer have to worry about PassMe, DLDI patching, flashing your DS, none of that. 4 years ago the "hacking" process of a DS was much more difficult; therefore, few people knew about it or cared to try to figure it out. I was courteous and provided an easy guide detailing what you need to get to hack your DS using a reliable device, and how to set it up.
But if you'd like to go ahead and hack it the old fashion way, which is very frustrating(I know I've done it), then go right ahead.
If not, follow this guide and do it the easy way!
So you can only download games you already own onto the DS? So there's no chance that you can download roms and play them?
Well that's exactly what it is, downloading roms, if you go to romulation, you can download ANY rom you want. The idea is that you are supposed to actually own the game, but hey, we know ppl download a lot more than they actually own, haha!
Also, You can set up emulators on your ds as well to play old classics like super nintendo, nintendo, and sega genesis games. I'll be writing a HUB about that shortly.
i just got a DSi XL. just wanna double check this is gonna work for it. i have the 1.4U firmware (updated)
I know for sure that the R4i works for it (I have one). I sold my m3i to a friend last week, and I'm waiting on my new one to come in. I'll be getting it this week. If you want, I can let you know if it works when I get it. And I hope it does work, because it's better than the R4i and it'd be a shame if that was the only flashcard that worked for it.
I have a DSi XL with 1.4u. I have an R4i Gold and did my best, but I am having issues. I think I loaded the latest 1.31 kernel correctly because I can play DS games, but very few. Most will freeze or not load at all. The opening screen of most games will take forever, or have screen tears or the music is choppy. Can anyone help me?
To be honest with you, get an m3i, they are the best by a long shot. I have an R4i and I personally do not like it. I used my friend's m3i last night in my XL and it worked amazing! SO I can't wait for my new one to come in. \
The R4i works well with the DSi, and the fact that it even works with the XL is good, but m3i is still the better choice, as you DO NOT have to load moonshell, you can play music and movies as soon as you turn on the DS, along with your DS games and homebrew apps/games ~~~ perfect ~~~
i read on another forum that if you already upgraded the firmware to 1.4u your screwed and cant flash it. you need another ds with 1.3 in order to fix the flash card. is that true? or can i just go ahead and buy an m3i and pop it into my XL with 1.4u and it'll work???
yes, the m3i zero is confirmed to work with DSi XL 1.4U, which is awesome, it is one of the few that actually does and STILL RETAINS all of its features. You'll need something called F_CORE.DAT

Hi Sierra - I was having trouble as well with the R4i gold. It's likely that you don't have the correct kernel version for your card. The new 1.8b version is working for me (1.4U firmware). You can find this version here -

How big is the average ds game?
games like Tetris DS are 16 megabytes, with the average game taking up about 64 megabytes, so far the largest game on the DS is Kingdom Hearts at 256 megabytes, but it's the only one that large. Typically the largest games are 128 megabytes.
I tried replying to this on my dsi but "Post Comment" wouldnt go. Java or something I guess. But I was thinking the games were in the four hundred megabyte range lol. But do you know of any Video Recording homebrew? Or would that take too much space on nds...
Last thing. This hack only works on ds and you need separate hack for dsi (for use of the camera. etc.) correct? Either way this is the best guide I've seen as far, explains more then any others ive looked at. Like where to find the stuff needed.

1.yeah the DSi browser sucks unfortunately =(
2.DS games won't get any larger than 256 megabytes, so if you have an 8 gigabyte card like the one I talk about in the guide, you're looking at about 100 games fitting on it, seeing as how most games are 64 megabytes.
3.Video recording homebrew, or ANY homebrew for that matter that actually takes advantage of DSi specific features is unheard of as of yet. I'm looking forward to somebody using the extra ram in the DSi when making homebrew games, that would be amazing!
4.No, this hack works on any model of DS, even if it is the DSi or the DSi XL. You'll need a file called F_CORE.DAT to be on your microSD card, I provide a link to download all the necessary files above.

Does it have to be class 2 sdhc micro card?
Or even use the micro card at all? (eg a cord that leads to computer.)

As again your guide is really great but sadly you need to add little details such as "you can also get this and this instead" You are kinda banking on everyone can get what they need.

don't worry about it, I provide the links to buy the memory cards as a courtesy, because THOSE are the memory cards I use personally and they work for me very well. I have an 8gb microsdhc card for movies and music, and a 16gb for strictly nintendo ds games and classic roms. What you should do is get the same exact memory card from ebay or a local store. However, most stores will not carry cards over 4 gigabytes, and especially not over 8 gigabytes.
The classes of memory cards does not affect the performance when used on the DS, it only affects the transfer speed when sending files to it via the computer. So if you're the type of person that likes to put new files on your card all the time, class 6 is your best choice, just know that ANY class will work just the same.
The microsd card stores the firmware you are using and ALL of your files, so yes, it must be present in your m3i zero (or any other flashcard). Because if it's not, you won't have any files to play with!
And lastly, yes I know I left out some possibilities, such as using an R4, G6, Supercard, Max Media Dock, etc. I did that because the m3i zero is the BEST flashcard available, I've tried all the others and they simply do not compare.
I've also only listed certain memory cards because those are the ones I personally use. Sandisk all the way. Some people prefer Kingston, because in some cases it prevents lag in games, but Sandisk has always worked for me flawlessly.
And don't worry, I was a "noob" it seems like just the other day. But once you develop a passion for this kind of stuff, you learn VERY quickly!

Basically, the R4 and the R4i are nice products mostly because they are VERY cheap. But they're also illegal and buggy. The m3i zero works FAR BETTER and is totally legal.
I would go with the m3i zero over the R4 any day.
but if you HAD to get an R4, get it for the ds lite, if you have a DSi or XL, ONLY get the m3i zero, as there is no chance of it not working on a DSi or XL.
I just don't have enough money to buy m3i zero lol haha... (over my budget :P)

How exactly is an existing DS game rom copied to the sd card when the DS rom slot is occupied by the M3i zero card? It seems to me that if you use the M3i card in the DS rom slot, the only way would be to remove the M3i zero card, and insert a DS game. Is that how it is done? I understand downloading roms from somewhere-but that is not what I want to do. I just want to back up my existing games.

If you get a regular DS Lite, you won't be able to take pictures, web browse, or play downloadable content from Nintendo. You wont' be missing out on a whole lot. Not to mention the R4 works amazing on a DS Lite.
If you get a DSi, you'll be able to have all those features, as well as the potential to still hack it. I wouldn't use an R4i if I were you, but it DOES work. I've just heard of so many issues with it, like lagginess, random bugs, whereas the m3i zero has none.
But in your situation, going with the R4 or R4i makes a lot of sense, good luck!

Here we go, you're gonna wanna go to a site like romulation.net
search for the game you're wanting to have on your m3i zero, and download it. It'll probably be in zip format, so you'll have to unzip it. The result will be a .nds file
Put that .nds file on your microsdhc card ANYWHERE, and then put the microsdhc card in your m3i zero and put that in your DS and boot it up.
All you gotta do now is click the game you want to play!~
And I know you don't want to download the roms, but it's the easiest way to get the job done. You could use a rom dumper for the DS games you actually own, but that takes a bit more time.

Hey man, first, thanks for the guide! Second, I followed all the steps to the letter (even bought the sansdisk and m3i from the links you provided) and I've done everything, got the red blink...but, after that I put the m3i card in my Dsi XL and it just boots up like normal. It doesn't go to that format screen you describe in step 8...I have reformatted the sansdisk and tried again but same result...any ideas?

...it just says "There is nothing inserted in the game slot". Any ideas? I'm on a mac, I have v 1.4 of Dsi, and I have m3i firmware 4.8. The System folder and the F Core.dat are on the root of my micro sans...any help ASAP would be MUCH appreciated :)

hi, yes, i am a different andrew :) alucard, also, after doing much more searching i see that some think it is a bad cable (the usb to flash cart) connector...problem is i am going out of town next weds and really wanted to trick out my daughter's dsl so she could watch movies on the plane. i dont see that i could possible order another m3i zero in time, and weird as it may sound, i would actually be very grateful to come meet you in clarksville to possibly use your cable since the consensus online is that it is a bad cable...i could pay you for your time and i swear i'm not a creep :) just a nashville dad trying to get this darn thing to work! let me know, thanks so much!

well, clearly alucard is a helpful guy which is why he posted this guide and offered his email for anyone with questions - thats a step beyond most would do, not to mention being prompt and helpful in his responses on this page. since we're both local, i figured i'd give meeting up briefly a try, fulling acknowledging that its a little "weird" (though, all in all, its really not). i really don't think i gave off any vibe of stalking other than coincidently sharing your name (a rather common name at that)...basically, i am in a pinch, that's all. i hate that i ordered a presumably malfunctioning cart from Hong Kong and not only will it be a pain to try to return, but i wont be able to receive one in time before i leave weds of next week. oi vey.
it will be interesting to hear what alucard thinks of my random cart issue in general, regardless of whether or not he minds if i meet up with him briefly to see if i can just give him my micro disk and perhaps use his usb adapter.
update: since my last post, I actually got the card to blink several (6) times and i thought it had worked, but alas, it gave an error msg when i put it in the dsi xl. now, when i try it, the light just stays on...tried everything! ugh.

Andrew!! Sorry I didn't get on here fast enough, do NOT order another m3i card, yours is working perfectly. the reason it gave you a constant red light the first time was because it had already been flashed with the firmware.
Now before doing anything at all, I want you to format your microsdhc card, get everything off it and start fresh:
You are using a DSi XL, which means you can't simply put the "system" folder on it and be done, no no no
You must also include the "F_Core.DAT" on the root of your SD card, just download that again above ^^^^^. What I am going to do is provide you a fresh link of m3i zero firmware: http://www.mediafire.com/file/23mwmitdnjn/SYSTEM.r
the firmware you downloaded before was my personal "system" folder, which is why when you booted it up the options did not appear, that's my mistake, and I'm glad you brought it to my attention. I also fixed the link above in the guide itself ^^^^
Now, the only reason you must have the F_CORE is because your DSi XL is version 1.4U
you must have the "system" folder and the "F_CORE.DAT" on the root of your microsdhc card. plug the usb cable into your m3i before plugging the other end into the computer. It will blink for about a minute. When that's done, pop it into your XL. If it's working correctly, you will a Danny Phantom Game icon.
If you see "M3 adapter", you did something wrong.
And you'll be good to go! And if you're still having problems, I'm in Nashville Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays; I attend ITT Technical Institute. So just swim over there if you can't get your card working.
Btw, this reply goes out to all the Andrews on here, as I am not completely sure which one I am talking to, haha!

alucard, thanks for the response - my problem was definitely not lack of f core dat tho...i've had the right version of that all along and i have also downloaded the firmware from other sources and still no avail...i'll send you an email with my number and if you can let me know when to stop by ITT, that'd be great. basically, what i'd need is for you to bring your adapter and see if we get a different result...if you could walk me thru the steps too, that'd be amazing, tho i am really following them to the letter! one thing, when i reformat my micro sd card i do it on my mac via "disk utility" and it calls fat32 "msdos"...i understand its a bit more straightfwd to format sd cards on PC, and i wonder if this is my problem (not being properly formatted), tho when i check the properties of my sd card it does in fact say "ms dos (fat32)". ugh, anyhow, i have some time over the next few days while your in Nashville and i'd love to hop on by ITT and get you to take a brief look at it as i am really bummed i am having trouble getting this done before i leave town next week (really wanted to have this to occupy the 4 yr old daughter :) please call or email a good time to meet you at ITT - also, would you per chance have a PC laptop on you? thanks a MIL, you are a really helpful guy!

you put your ds roms on the microsdhc card, and then put that into your m3i zero.
The SD slot on the DSi is only used for pictures, and .aac music files

Hey can you load up cheats without downloading anything addictional on the m3i zero? eg Cheat engine like things (look it up)
And Damian if there is a black screen behind it I think its frzoen. try restarting it alot. It worked for me on 4th restart when it froze.
if there is an m3i zero icon instead of the Danny Phantom icon, your m3i isn't updated. Format it and restart, make sure your m3i is flashed with the F_CORE on it.
and Andrew, yeah I sure did forget the flipnotes! haha
And as for cheats, when you about to click on a nds rom to boot it up, instead of clicking on it, take your stylus and drag the game to the left, you'll see an options side bar come outta no where, let go and you'll see cheat options

Yes I got it to work with Danny Phantom. I looked for f_core and found a different version. It booted up. I got some roms from tehparadox.com/forum/f76 and they show up but almost like directories with files like .svf and .zip extensions. I am going to try the site you said to see if I can get a few games to show up. The slot1 and slot2 thing off of one of the main menu icons has me confused. What's that about guys (Andrew1 and Andrew2)? Thanks for your help so far and up to now.
What is the diff between Sakura and Johnny Phantom? I saw a video from an Australian vendor who did have the m31 icon and it looked like an easier menu to work off of. Everyone is doing the Johnny Phantom icon and main menu then? Should i see a game rom icon only or a title off of my menu when I try to play my games? As I said, I am getting goofy stuff off of my menu.

I notice your screen snapshot above on the hubpage. It shows a more pronounced lettering,white, and more colorful...perhaps bigger icons. You have an interesting background in use too. On my DS, the icons seem to be smaller, and the lettering is not white. There is no background. May I ask how you achieved these things? I want to gussy up my screen. Thanks much.
@Andrew, I am not sure about any hacking software for wifi available for the DS, I know there is homebrew out there that allows you to take control of someone's computer though, it's pretty sweet ;)
@Damian, I downloaded a Castlevania skin. Your m3sakura comes with 7 or 8 default skins, you can switch them by going into your "system" folder and clicking on a ".skn" file
I just got my 8gb card in the post. When I think about it im amazed 8gb can fit on such a tiny card when the dvd would be full as. Included a sandisk adpater no idea what thats meant for, as well as mirco sd adapter with card reader :)

now im interested in modding in for movies and music, also to not carry around so many carts.

M3i is easily the best out there, I use it myself, and no I am not affiliated with them in any way. No, you shouldn't have updated, but the m3i will still work if you follow this guide.
Let me know if you need any help, although I can tell already you're gonna need a memory card larger than 8 gigabytes if you want movies, music, and games. To give you an idea, I have an 8 gig microsdhc card for my m3i, and I have about 20 games on it, 2 movies, and 400 songs and still have 3 gigs of space left. But if you're wanting like all your media on the go plus your games, go with the 16 gig card towards the top of this page ^^^^
so the m3i will still work as if i never updated to 1.4u correct?

I cant really tell whether it is an R4i or an R4~ =.=; Maybe it is fake or something~ since the R4 is in red colour and actually at the R4's theme it state that it is R4i English version~
But at the R4 itself, it doesn't state the 'i' it just state R4~ huhu~ after changed the theme yeah, it just state R4DS english version~

Kyopi, I'm gonna be honest with you, you shouldn't have gotten an R4 at all, especially not the older kind. The R4i is decent at most, but nothing compares to the m3i zero. If you can, I would order that, because it doesn't have ANY compatibility issues whatsoever. All the games load perfectly, and save perfectly.
And from what you described, I think you may have a ghetto copy of an R4.
I would sell it to a friend and just buy an m3i zero
but if you're just absolutely determined to make that R4 work for you, I'll look into it for you, although it sounds like its working worse than my old Datel Max Media Dock I bought at walmart years back LOL

Great. I formatted my sdhc and now I've come up with a strange new menu. GM manager. And it now says M3 DS real when loading. Did I do something wrong?
And also picross 3d as well as other games come up with blank white screen when loaded.

Picross 3D is a DSi exclusive game from what I understand. (But I will look into why it's booting weird, you may need the latest firmware, if that's the case, I'll find it and provide it to you)
Also, when the m3i zero boots up it is SUPPOSED to say M3 Real on the bottom, no worries there, because essentially the m3real and zero are the same thing (you can even use the same firmware). The only thing different about the m3i zero is the update capability (the F_CORE.DAT) Basically, this means that there is absolutely NO REASON at all to own an m3i zero UNLESS you have a DSi or DSi XL.
And to the first (longer) comment above, good ideas! The reason I left out some of the *little details* is because my guide is focused on just exposing your DS to homebrew and DS roms. But ya know what, it's a great idea! Especially if you plan on using cheats!
Whenever you are browsing DS rom files, take your stylus and drag it to the left and a rectangular button will pop on the right, let go and you'll be taken to a screen. On this screen you can specify to use cheats or use soft reset.
Cheats are pretty self explanatory. But the soft reset feature is nice if you want to be able to return to the m3i zero menu screen to choose another game without having to completely turn off the DS.
And as for the download play option, if you are playing a game (for example like Metroid Prime Hunters) with a friend who does not have the game, they'll need to download a demo of it from you to play it. Checking this option simply allows you to do that without interference. Some games will allow you to let your friends download off of you without this option checked, but to be on the safe side, it's always better to check this option before starting a "single-card play session"

Just a quick comment on the M31Zero card. It works. It's great. The weak spot is the very flimsy cable that you plug into it to flash it. One end is the usb plug and the other is the flimsy end. Be gentle with it! Then put it away in case you need it again after flashing your M31Zero card. That's possible but unlikely. I like the 16 gig sd card to plug into the M31Zero card. That's just me. I believe in lots of space. You will want lots of space to put your games on. That goes for the side sd card you can plug in for the movies you can put on it. Having a few movies to see while driving is a beautiful thing. Alucard_1990-thanks for a great guide.

Well I got a replacement M3i Zero because my one stuffed.
Also got a replacement usb reader (when they sent stuff to me they forgot it) and GUESS WHAT
When I tried it I had to sandpaper the sdhc slot larger because it was WAY too tight. Eg enough force to smash a loaf of bread in
then I plugged it in. Pleased it worked fine I took it out and plugged it into m3i zero and it wasnt going... so i went into computer and viola! It was completely corrupted. But it wasnt m3i zero or anything.
Getting a replacement 8gb card.
lucky I had a spare 2gb one. so i know it was just chance this happened because I tried it and it went fine.
but I'm gonna have to redownload alot of stuff...
I didnt make backups.
Maybe a piece of plastic shaving got into the circuit at a critical moment.
If anyone knows of a TRUSTED download to try retrieve .nds files please reply here.

Once you have the M3I Zero setup you dump whatever you want on it.
There are no obligations.
It can run anything with a .nds at the end
So depending on what you want some homebrew is better for you

I downloaded a programme that formatted sd cards...reformatted..then downloaded M3iZero core data V1.4 and the system...unzipped them..they are on my sd card..when I put it in the flash card there was no blinking..is that because it had been flashed before( when and how often do you need to use the flash card?)I have old Danny boy coming up on my dsi and the M3Zero icon but it says : {Language :English} No system file found...Put system file in...Can some one please help...the repeated downloads will bankrupt me..This has been going on for 6 weeks...I know I am slow but....Thanks guys....I know some one will be a genius and take pity on me!!
hmm... Mary I am not really sure what the problem is, if you have the Danny Phantom logo everything should be good to go...
If it boots up and says Language: English, thats the setup screen and you are SUPPOSED to be there, you'll need to configure the options but it sounds like to me you had it right the first time...

What is the size and date of your system file on the sd card? Do you have a directory of the files on the sd card you can share (the system file and the Fcore.dat file?

Guys thank you for your time..when that Language ..etc comes up I can't do a thing ..it says i have no system file..Damien..I check on the sd card in the computer and it is there...date 22/06/10 42.4MB..called GS&M3DS-RM68,,it has been unzipped..so had the F core Dat file...yep old Danny comes up..I open that..the sceen comes black with the M3 Zero at the botton and then that message...I have reloaded the whole thing about 6 times..what do you mean Alucard "links to the above ^^^ in the setting up your M3i section"...do not know what this^^^means and where is the "setting up m3i?"..yeh, Yeh I know I am a learner!!I have read teh info on this site a million times!!So grateful for your advice and hopefully you can lead my to get this 3$%@#$%# to work!

ok now I understand!!I did that and I could not get the system file extracted so I followed the advice of B and downloaded from www.handheldsources.com...the exctracing worked on both files but on the dsi it still says no system file!!!

to play gba games using an m3i zero, you'll need a ram pack, but this only works with a DS or DS Lite, if you're using a DSi or DSi XL, you're outta luck when it comes to playing gba games, unless you buy a different flash card.

Hi, Just to let you know. The SYSTEM folder download seems to be corrupt. Dowloaded it twice, tried extracting it with winrar, powerarchiver and 7-zip, always says archive is corrupt. Downloaded it from http://www.handheldsources.com/M3DS/Download_M3DSR copied it to the sd-card with F_CORE.dat, inserted USB cable, got blinking light (about 20 sec.), but no Danny Phantom icon (and error message on DSi). I have a european DSi XL, could that be the problem ?

I have reformatted the sd card...I have downloaded the n3i system from this site ^^^ and teh core Dat from this site^^^I got no blinking when I tried the flash card...but I have Danny Phampton and teh M# icon coming up but it says" no system file found! Put system file in"...however the system fiel shows on the microsd card when in my computer....any one have suggestions of what I am doing..I have formatted the sd card X2 and downloaded so many times...thanks mary
When I open my system folder, it has 97 items in it including 5 sub folders-2 of which are skin1 and skin2; it has a total size of 101 MB
Sorry. I hit return too quickly...too early in the morning! The system folder is in the root directory of the card. My FCORE file is dated 7/9/2009 with a size of 2048 KB. It is also in the root directory of the card. The root directory of the card should have FCORE as a file name, and SYSTEM as a file icon. So my SYSTEM folder and yours seem to have a distinct size difference. I don't think you mentioned the directory info on the FCORE file.BTW, the SYSTEM file date would be the date it was created by you. Last, I think I lost track but you had posted earlier you were not getting the flashing light on your card when it was attached to your pc with the flimsy cable. I did my card a couple of times and it always flashed slowly, then sped up with its flashing...might have slowed down a little then stopped. I could always get the blinking light and the number of times flashing the card meant nothing-except the first time was enough. Subsequent flashings did not mean anything. I had to flash a couple of times to be sure I had done it right and with the different system and fcore files I used. I think I remember I ran into Alucard's files as not working. I read that he updated his links. Mary-if you can confirm you flashed, that is one thing. I think I am reading your system file is different in size from the one I have. Please check your system file size, and check the number of files inside that folder. If you don't have something close to the file count I provided inside your system file folder, that may be while the DS balks at what you have ... it's corrupted, damaged, not working, incomplete, etc. If that is the case, you need to work on the SYSTEM folder again (get a fresh download, extract onto your sd card, check the size of the folder, and number of files inside the folder) and proceed from there. It's early in the morning and I haven't had any coffee so if I misread anything-sorry. I hope this all helps.

Damien thanks so much for trying to help me..since Alucard has fixed his site I have downloaded from there(this page) a couple of times ..reformatted etc..I now have M3Sakura 147 unzipped 86.9 MB.. and F.core unzipped 2.0 MB. They appear on my sd card when in the computer..the M3Sakura with I open it has many files probably about 90 like you...I have downloaded tetris as a test...BUT I get teh Danny Phamton icon and then it says " no system file found!!Do I need to put the files into a special file. When I first started to try to do this(6 weeks ago!!) I flashed the card successfully..but still did not get it to work. I have not been able to flash it since...I have formatted the Sd card many times so I am assuming I need to flash it again? After you down load all the files on you sd card in the flash card reader do you need to do anything except unzip them? Now before you get your brain working on this one have a coffee!!Thanks Mary
More info..I have 5 sub folders called Font, Saver DB, skin1 skin2, font.. the F Core file unzipped is 338 KB and the M3Sakura 147X unzipped is 17,167 KB...so looks similar to what you described....thanks to Alucard updating the link..I am sure I am doing something silly...thanks guys
My M3Sakura is 42 megs unzipped. It has 6 subfolders and 18 files. Yours sounds much smaller. Fcore only has to be on the disk at flashing time. Did you see your flashing light when you flashed the card? If so, that's a wrap. It looks like your m3Sakura directory is goofy. The six subfolders I have are language, launch, plugins, sndeff, text font, unicode, and as I said I have the 18 files apart from the 6 subfiles. I am going to do a search of my drives to see if I can find the MSakura file. I don't remember where I got it. Maybe it is time to send my copy to you? Ok, I found my download. It is called M3Sakura_v1.45_5th_x21_Multi.zip so why not Google that and see? It is what I used with the M3i zero card. I downloaded it when Alucard's links were down. Let us know how it goes.

Just got my M3 card today. It worked fine on my brand new DSi XL, but there are two issues that people should be aware of.
My M3 has no spring on the cartridge where you insert the MicroSD. I don't know why mine doesn't have it but I have to wedge it out with the end of a paperclip in order to get it out. Can't say how long my SD card will last doing that.
Second is that people should be aware that if they have firmware 1.4 on their DS they should go to this website to get the latest software: http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/
Other than that the M3 is a good, easy to use card

Mary, yes I am that same Damian. I am still a novice. When you boot up with the Danny Phantom icon, there should have been a screen that asked you what language to use. English, I guess, was what you wanted. About flashing-you had to have flashed the card because it finally worked. You only have to successfully flash once (you could do it millions of times but it is the first time that counts). In your case, because everyone is working remotely, it is best to cover the basics. If you flashed it again, it would be an independent act from copying MSakura over. You would have had to have had FCORE on the sd card before you flashed. After you flash successfully, FCORE can go bye-bye. Now, about switching back to English. When I boot it up, it goes through a chkdsk process then I hit select, then hit start to open the system menu. You get four choices...4th is Language settings and the 5th is a combo on the same line: Save File Restore Menu so choose English from the 4th setting option, then Save File and you should be back in English. Also, you should copy the contents of your sd card onto a c:\backnds directory (that is what I call my backup). My son crashed the system file somehow but I was able to copy it from c:\backnds to the sd card and the DS booted up right away...back in perfect order. As you add games, do a weekly backup to your c:\backnds directory...just to be safe. In my case, kids can do fantastic things to hardware so a backup is just plain smart. If you were to lose your DS (boo hoo), at least you would have a backup for the new one. We have two so a backup is making the second DS conversion very easy. Alucard gets all the credit. He made all this happen.
Anyone know if it is worth going higher with newer versions of Msakura such as 1.47? What's the difference? Do we wait until a game won't play and then upgrade Msakura? Also, I found out that some rom's won't play unless you first run a decryption program over them. Use advanced endrypts 1.2 it is easy to use. You just have to have the rom in question in the same directory as the endrypts program. After you run it (program is quite self-explanatory and easy to figure out), it tells you if it was successful or not (successful=encryption was removed; unsuccessful=encryption was not removed because there was none). Then you copy the very same rom file from the endrypts directory to your sd card. It's a great little program. Of course, I would never use roms that were not my own. I only make backups of roms I have purchased.
Thanks Damien and Alucard..so much..I am still battling...I have downloaded a game I am following teh instructions..ie bringing up the game pressing A but it keeps going to "do you selcet the directory when I try to play...what am I doing wrong?..Good idea to back up..so that is onto my computer?...thanks I am now not needing to speak French...(as if)...I appreciate the help very much...
Mary, if you have the language changed to English, then here is how I get my DS going. I power it up, hit the Phantom icon, see the chkdsk screen diagnostic (ignore that), and see the game menu come up. Hit select, then arrow up or down to highlight the game. Hit the A button and you are playing the selected game.

and mary, sounds like your problem MIGHT be that you don't have both the system folder AND F_CORE on the sd card before flashing it. It needs to have BOTH when it flashes,

I have downloaded a few games..Tetris is working and so is Tangrems..I have Dora and Smart Kids..can get to teh point where it is in the directory and the game shows at the bottom of the screen but when I press Start and A the goes back to " do you want the directory..I have done every tutorial and hate to think I have to wipe it all and go back to where I was last week!!You guys got me out of there!! I hit the Phantom and GM manager comes up..I then choose The icon with the DSI at the bottom of the screen is a yellow square with [Start}..when I press start all the games come in a list ..I find the one I want and no matter what I seem to do it goes to : Do you select directory"..?...I can get a particualr game at hte bottom of teh screen but can only get two games to work...Can't believe I am having so much trouble...all the tutorials seems so easy...thanks again

I don't press start after the Phantom loads. I press Select. Then my list of games are able to be navigated by the up-down arrows on left of the DS. I highlight the one I want and press A. I don't know why you would have difficulty if the games are there and showing. I have to think since you specifically said you press Start...that you should press Select, then navigate and press A. In fact, I never press Start ever. If you have a friend who can double-check your process, that may help. A second pair of eyes is great. Other than that, I don't have more for you. Afte..I had the same thing..I copied the system file from the SD card to the SD card and it worked...do not ask me why...I even tried to remove it to get other things working and got the same message again
I now have 4 games working...when I downloaded them I unzipped them however there was still part of the file as a RAR so once I unzipped that separately the game worked..however..I have a GBA Rom that I can't get to work as well as many others....seems like something else needs unlocking....do you have to unzip torrents? Boy there is so much to learn..Could not do it with this site Alucard...ta

I just received my M3i Zero and no matter where I try to obtain my software for the "System" folder, it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure that I've successfully flashed the M3i Zero with the F_Core.dat and my DSi XL recognizes the M3 cartridge as such now. Whenever I launch it however I get an error message indicating that it can't find any system files. I've tried downloading the System folder from this page as well as many others many times but I get the same error each time. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. My DSi is running software version 1.4U. Can anyone provide me with a known working version of the System folder? I'm REALLY frustrated with this!

You're a little behind the curve friend, the first paragraph says m3i zero, and yes it is hacking, all the passme and flashing are already done, its a streamlined version of hacking for casual users. Trust me I've done it the old fashion way back in 2005.

the files on this page have been working for everyone else, your best bet is it reformat your card with FAT32, replace the system folder and the F_CORE.DAT at the root of the card, and reflash it.

Get it from ebay. Try to find one which contains a
the same items in case you want to use a sd card with your nintendo dsi in the future. Those sdhc cards can double up like that.
Ebay is WAY cheaper then that. Use advanced search and use "advailble to my country" then when you go on a listing check to see if you can recieve it.
They can get pissed off if you buy it but they dont send to your country.
Unless you live at a VERY remote place you should make that your second choice after amazon.
Go for buy now listings if you dont want to have to bid.

I'm having trouble with my M3 Zero. I loaded both the F_Core and M3 Sakura 147X folders to the micro sd card and when I insert the sd into the M3 card and plug it in, a red light comes on. It doesn't flash.
The first time I did it, I had loaded the the F_Core folder and the internal contents "SYSTEM" folder and it flashed just like the directions said, but when I plugged it into my DSi xl...nothing happened. So I started from the beginning again and added the two folders and this time it doesn't flash when I plug in the M3...it only has a red light come on.
Have any suggestions???

A friend told me about this site and I also did what he did. We got the same messages you did. We went out on the web and got a download of M3 Sakura and used that one instead of the one on this hub. The card flashed ok, and it booted. For some reason the link on this page just didn't work for either of us. But everything here is what we followed and the ds units boot up and everything works.

I've been thinking of getting a flash cart for a while now, and after seeing this page, finally decided on getting the M3. And ordered from the 4coolday link.
Only now I'm starting to worry. They say same day/fast shipping, but it's been over a week, and it hasn't shipped yet according to their invoice. I tried e-mailing them asking if there was any problem, and I haven't even gotten a response yet. I'm starting to get antsy here now, since I've no desire to get bilked out of 30 bucks.

4Coolday is legit. It is coming from Hong Kong so it takes about 15-17 days. As for the M3 Sakura link, I went to m3adapter.com which is on the card itself. There, it gives another site to download software. You can get a new F_core file that just got released...almost twice as big as the prior one, and the Sakura file.

The M3i card finally arrived at my house today. So I did everything in the guide (I'm no PC novice), but the M3i card won't flash, it will only show the red blinking light once and then it just turns off again. Could you help me with this problem?
Ano, are you sure your arrow on the cable is on the back side of the card? If you are looking at the back of the rom card, you should see the arrow on the cable. That is the only way it will work. See the photo Alucard provided above.

Mine lags when it is starting up and my brothers lags even more with the lag extending to a game I dont have a problem with.

This lag goes to 3 different M3i Zeros that all have 8gb Sandisk cards and they have around 300mb free each.
I just tested it and found that the nintendo and M3i Zero didnt have the faults.
Its the 8gb cards.
Not sure what im going to do about that. Maybe reinstall whole thing and see.

I don't have lag but I have the 16 gig card because I want movies on mine. If you have an 8 gig card and only 300 meg free, that is not enough. That is about 3% free and there must be temp files. I might even go 32 gig myself because I want a few more movies for trips.

executioner some downloads in this site may not work for you but they work for other people. Unfortunly he really does need to get more of those. Because they only work for maybe 1/3 of people...
But this is why I think this site is great.
This gives alot of FAQ due to the comments and I recommend checking here for any problems you may encounter before looking else where. (unless its over a specific game, then look else where)
And any answers you cant find could get posted here :)

I got an m3i card, did everything it said to do here, and it also blinked several times when I plugged it into the pc/usb. I get 'An error has occurred. Press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off. Any ideas ? Thanks
I havnt been visiting this site as much but what that looks like is that you've done something wrong.
It happens to me when I do something like take out the game while it is still running.
Kinda like the computer saying "Windows didnt start properly"
So the whole thing works. But something is the problem.
Try taking out the card - sdhc card and putting back in.
Then try reinstalling it
Then if all else fails I think you might have a corrupted M3i Zero
But Id check all factors before trying.
(Dont forget to format when re-installing)

I still have some questions though, I hope you can answer them:
- Which formats of audio/video can I play in the M3i (DivX/XviD, MP3?)
- What software do I need for playing files other than roms? (I've heard of a thing called Moonshell? and Homebrew?)
- Can I also play older roms, like GameBoy, NES, SNES, N64?
- What do you think of the Acekars2i and the DSTwo in comparison to the M3i, and can those also play XviD's/MP3's/older roms?

you can play all your older roms using homebrew emulators, not N64 of course but yeah
moonshell is built into the m3i zero if you use the m3sakura firmware, which is by far the best firmware available for the m3i zero
the AKi is also a good card, it has better file system organization than the m3i, but thats about it, it lacks in other areas the m3i zero excels in
Well, I sell and review FCs, and I really enjoy the stability of the M3i Cero, and a couple other great cards are the Acekard 2i, and the SuperCard2i. The SuperCard has a bit of built in RAM, so you can run your GBA games on a DSi without having to do a hardmod to install extra RAM. I cannot wait for the 3DS to come out, but there are rumours spreading that there will be major protection against modding.

How big should the m3i zero memory card and the micro sd card be?
8 gigs is generally enough for anything you could want, I had 1,000 of my songs and about 20 games, and a movie on mine with an 8 gig memory card
So, I ordered the M3i zero, as the official website stated nothing about a newer version being in the works. I decided to buy a 16Gb card with it, so I can use my DSi as an iPod as well.
Hopefully it's here tomorrow :D

Well, the cart came in the mail today. I've tried your F_CORE.dat file, but that didn't work (red light didn't blink). I downloaded a different F_CORE.dat, which was 6Mb, not 2Mb like yours, and that one did work.
The system folder from the sakura zipfile also didn't work. Tried another one which did. Strange, but perhaps it's because I'm in EU, and Sakura is made for USA? (pal/ntsc?)
Anywho, M3Real works for me. :)

How can i install games to the system memory of ndsi, i have lots of slots in the system memory of ndsi and i want to have quick access to some games that is why i wanted to put it in the system memory but i don't know how.
Those "slots" as you put it are advailble for legally downloaded NDsi games from the Dsi shop (acessible through the shop option. This costs money to download and you get 800 free points to spend)
They may be used for other things but not the Flash Cards (M3i Zero)
But hell would I like it if you could.
The flash cards run games which Nintendo doesnt want people to be able to run without paying.
So why on earth would they support and enhance it?
They and the game makers would be losing thousands of dollars.
Why even this hub is costing them money. It encourages people to buy a M3i Zero and shows how to get it going.
In short. You cant use those slots with flash cards/carts
You have to go into the flash cart itself.
If some kinda hack comes in for the nintendo ds/dsi though. Hell am I going to install it.

I have downloaded a few roms to try out and buy the original if I want like the games. They are zip files. I have already unzipped the downloaded files, then when I open up the folder, some games still have zip files inside the unzipped folder. Do I need to unzip these files again?
Lastly, do I copy the whole unzipped folder to the root of the microsd card?

Just got a new M3 Zero card. The 1.4 firmware will not flash on it at all. It will flash the 1.6 firmware version. The card just goes black screen after launching on a DS XL. Works fine on a regular DS tho. Anyone have any ideas?

Its just me but from what I know so far.
Id recommend Dsi XL.
But caution. I dont own one so I cant judge as accuratlly.
PROS: Has bigger stylus. Easier to handle but heavier. Bigger screen size. Bigger overall size. Better sound quality
CONS: Isnt as portable if you want to put in pocket. I Dont really know if It'd fit.

The XL has bigger, brighter and better color reproduction screens, 2 bigger styli, one being a bit bigger than the DSi's and the other being a lot bigger (the pen-like stylus). It has the marvelous glossy finish on the top only, so less fingerprints, has a lot longer baterry life, similar to the DSLite and finally, has louder speakers.
^^ as you see they left out some details like the fact it is heavier and bulkier.
Look up some pics of the Dsi XL will ya.
The camera quality is the same btw.

You should get some accessorys for the Dsi-Ds-Dsi XL

Its a decision I never regretted.
Currently my screen cover is very badly scratched up and has a deep gorge. But if I replace it then I know Ill have an unblemished screen once again.

The card is a brand new M3I Zero card purchased from the place this site discussed above. The micro SDHC card is also the one discussed on this site. It only flashes with core 1.6 (I have tried 1.4 and even 1.0). I have tried every System file setup I could find. The card has been formatted each time between tries. Nothing works on the DSI XL. After launching the Danny Phantom icon, the screen just goes black and stays that way. Any suggestions?

1. Format Card
2. Download it and put on your sdhc card. DON’T PLACE ANYTHING ELSE ON THE CARD. (Btw If this doesn’t work tell me what card you are using, The size and brand)
3. Blow inside your Dsi's cartridge slot (make sure you don’t spit...) to get rid of anything that might be dust.
4. Place sdhc card in M3i Zero and slot M3i Zero into your Dsi.
5. Run it and if problems persist then place a little celletape on the back of the card (enough so it fits really snug, not jammed but snug) then try again
If problems still continue then either we got different versions of system files (doubt it) or your card is faulty.
Email the people you got it off. If I’m to believe you correctly www.4coolday.com and tell them that it doesn’t work with the Dsi which is what you got it for.
They could argue (if you said it works with Nds) but then you could also point out the obvious difference between M3 Zero and M3i Zero :\
And you should be able to get another one without sending back the faulty one but if they do ask you too then its up to you. And this is just an idea but you could ask them to pay return shipping.
Normally you shouldn’t have to return faulty products.
But if the new one doesn’t work either then its something wrong with you...
(unless it's something new)

The settings in the system file will be my settings and this means you should already have everything fine and going.
You will have to change settings to your liking and you are NOT going to get the settings startup
(you aint missing anything)
But if you do wish to change settings then press the "start" button on the Nintendo Ds/Dsi/Dsi-XL and change from there, this system file's upload should work for all M3i Zero cards. Because as far as I'm aware the cards are all the same because they can just be upgraded.

btw do i only unzip the rom once then copy the whole folder to the root of memory card?
Some of the roms I downloaded, after unzipping, still have zip files inside the forlders.

Thanks Andrew for all that trouble. I tried the system file and this time it said "No system file found". It said this for both the DS and the DSI XL. Put my other system folder on the card, back to working in the DS but not the DSI XL. The micro SDHC is the 8gb Sansdisk shown at the top of this site. This card is super new, just shipped after the long Manuf. delay of the M3I Zero people.
I find it also very odd that it will not flash the 1.4 firmware and only the 1.6.

I also had a long frustrated time trying to get my new m3izero flashed and it finally worked after I followed a link from m3adapter.com to dl the new updated F_CORE.DAT that is 6mb.

Huzzah, M3i finally came today.
I think your files are still off, because I too was having problems flashing it at first. But once I did some searching and found working ones, your walkthrough worked without a hitch. Thanks a bunch for making it so painless.
I do have one little problem with the card so far though. When I close the lid on my XL, the system doesn't go into sleep mode. Not fully anyways. The screen turns off but it still flickers every second, and the sound turns choppy and keeps playing. It's in "sleep mode" only in that I guess it's using less power? But it's not the legitimate sleep mode where the blue light dims. The game is still active and playing.
Is this an issue with the card or something? I'm a bit worried about leaving the thing in this kind of state, plus I can imagine problems with a few games that require you to go into sleep mode for some sort of quirk.

Is this ok to use with retro atari games like space invader, galaxian? I think these have ".a26" file extension.
I think Romulation doesn't do nds roms anymore.
Is there any way to set up a folder sorting system? Right now, I'm just dumping the roms onto the root, and it also puts all the saves and cheat files there too. I have 5 games and like 20 files now. Any way to say have a ROM folder for roms, and a SAV folder for saves, and so on? Just so the card doesn't look so messy.

ving a bit of problem with M3i Zero. Sometimes it goes blank when loading games and stays like that. When I press the power button, DSi goes back top main menu. I have to reflash the cart for it to work. Any idea whats the problem?

Does it also happen to you? I contacted the vendorand they said it could be corrupt micro sd or poor contacts between the DS and M3i cart.

The only problem I'm having is that I am unable to view any videos on my DSi XL. I can play games and everything else with the M3i. I've converted my videos to DPG using Xilisoft and I'm still unable to view any videos. When I try to open a video, it just shows a white screen on th bottom, black on top. What am I doing wrong? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
Figured out what was wrong... I downloaded some videos using your links and was able to play those. I guess something was wrong with the files that I converted.
It could've been the bitrate or ANY number of problems, but if the ones I provided worked, then you AT LEAST know your m3i isn't the problem, and that's good right? ;)

By "any other game cartriges" you mean legal store brought games?
If so then the problem lies in the dslite, M3Zero is not at fault.
If it is not this, Then try downloading different system files, look up and you will find a system file I uploaded then try them all.
Dont bother doing this if you have problems with legal game cartriges because this just means you need to get a replacement DSLite. The DSLite is faulty though they may just send it in for repair.
And just a note. Dont leave the M3Zero in the DSLite when you send it in =D

lol Thanks Libraryaddict! I will NOT send the M3! Strange that the legal games are not getting detected. I recall this happening right after I tried the M3 into the slot to get a feel of how it fit. I didnt even turn it on. Just inserted. Didnt even have the sd in there. Not sure if all the pins are ok but they look fine. Gonna fork up the 80 bucks and drive this thing to chatsworth to get it repaired.
I need some help understanding the M31zero and M3 cards. I have the former and I have the July system file, and the latest MSakura software. Everything works except for a few buttons on a couple of the newest games. In order to get those and future games working, I updated to the Sept system file but when I boot up, I get something completely different, and I can't seem to navigate through the meager written prompts. I think it is the core file for the latter card but may work on the former too-I just don't know how to use it I guess. My point is I want my menu to look like it does now and in your video. I deleted the new Sept core system file, and restored from a backup to the July core. I think the July core file is strictly M3i zero and not M3. So my questions are: a)if we want to stay M31 zero and keep our known menu, we have to download and use only the M31 zero core file (yes?) and b)the latest core file for M3 card is something to stay away from if we use M3i zero? My goal is to keep the menu visually consistent when I boot up via the Phantom icon and be able to use newer games. Right now, it's becoming an issue. I had Toy Story 3 from Gamestop, backed it up, then rebooted and loaded Toy Story 3 from the backup-no love! I think Nintendo is one run ahead these days.

Anyway. If you can, see about other kinds of Nintendo Ds's. Such as Dsi, Dsi XL and there is a new one coming out.

I had a broken button and a scratched screen. I went back to the shop in desperation rather then pay $10 for postage and the shop just handed me a brand new one...

Some shops upgrade their Dsi's and Dsi's XL as part of the service. Check if it has been upgraded before ordering.
This is not a problem with Nintendo DS as it cannot be upgraded.

Andrew, thanks for your suggestions. The broken button thing is that button A doesn't work on Toy Story 3 but that is in the game itself. Otherwise all buttons on the DS are working. I meant that some DS buttons are not functioning (working physically to press) but not executing their roles in the games (A button has no entry into the Toy Story 3 game or no function/effect). Using the purchased game, the A button works...but not on the backup. I see this a bit more with newer games. My kids are torturing me because I don't let them use their purchased games, only backups. And with the A key not working, or some other issues, they want me to buy a new rom card...different brand. They understand upgrades and are pushing me to get latest firmware updates and I can't follow what is happening with M3i zero. I'm not the smart one in the family.
When I get the ds lite back from nintendo repair, should I use the m3 with the latest core and MSakura software? What can I do to prevent the ds lite from failing read the cartridges?
I followed this guide to a "T" and even used the links to buy both items mentioned. I got the SD HC card almost immediately but the M3i took several more weeks to get. When I got it, I followed the instructions here down to the letter. I read other places that say you need the F_CORE.DAT file no matter what but this site says you only need it for DSi and DSi XL. I have a DS Lite so I'm confused as to the validity of the F_CORE.DAT needing to be used ONLY for the DSi and DSi XL.
When I put the SYSTEM folder on the card, place it in the M3i, and plug the USB cable in to the M3i, the light stays solid red. I tried an SD HC 16GB from my Motorola Droid phone, put the SYSTEM folder on that, and then repeated the process to get a solid red LED again.
I have tried various different SYSTEM folders, dumping the F_CORE.DAT (both versions) in and out of the SYSTEM folder, etc. I think I have a faulty M3i but I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with this new batch of M3i cards? I saw they were out of stock and only recently (last month or so) got a new batch out to retailers.
I am really disappointed, to say the least. To make matters worse, 4CoolDay has yet to respond to my e-mail about the problems despite saying they would respond within 12 hours to all e-mails. Free shipping is great when it doesn't take 3 weeks to get your product and it doesn't come DoA. Next time I think I'll buy from a US company that types in proper English and doesn't take as long to ship. At this point, I wouldn't even care if I had to pay for shipping.
Any ideas to what else I can try, I would appreciate it. Oh, and I did try formatting the SD HC card different ways, NTFS and FAT32. I even tried formatting it with SD Formatter which didn't yield a different results. Furthermore, the M3 SD-to-USB adapter is terrible and seems to have trouble transferring files correctly that exceed 200kb.

I got my m3i zero yesterday. I went through the steps (my DSi XL is 1.4) so I used the 1.4 file DAT file. I got the SOLID RED LIGHT no matter what I tried (formatting, DAT file only, etc.).
I then ran across a link online that mentioned a specific version of the m3i zero - GMP-Z003 - the version I happen to have. The post claimed that you need to use the 1.6 dat file with this particular m3i zero card. I downloaded it, and it seems to have worked, or at least I now get an initial 30 seconds of blinking followed by a short solid red, then off.
I do not have my DSi with me to try it out - will have to wait until tonight.
Here is my current questions - Will the 1.6 dat file work if I have 1.4 on my DSi? If not, any suggestions on mitigation - apparently, I need to use 1.6 with my m3i - how can I get 1.6 on the DSi?

I got mine to work finally thanks to Dutch. Thank you so much for your information Dutch. I think these new GMP-Z003 ones are a tad different from the ones listed on all the guides. I suspect a LOT of people will have similar trouble.
The link I've provided is my webserver with the DS.zip file containing the SYSTEM folder (just a default SYSTEM folder) and the F_CORE.DAT for 1.6. Feel free to download/scan it if you're suspicious but I got tired of looking in 10 different places for the DAT file and the default SYSTEM folder so this worked for me!

Check these links out. It looks like the 1.6 F_CORE.DAT file should work for the newest versions of firmware for the DSi's.

Try my DS.zip file and see if just adding those (it's the M3i default SYSTEM folder and the F_CORE.DAT file for the 1.6U, which is needed for the GMP-Z003 models) to the SD card and flashing your M3i works for you. It says the 1.6U F_CORE.DAT file works with all versions of DS's.
Here's what I did to finally get my M3i GMP-Z003 to flash and work with the Sakura SYSTEM folder provided by the author of this guide:
1.) Format your SDHC using a FAT32 file system (quick format is fine) using the larger SD adapter your SDHC card may have came with and a laptop with an SD Card reader or an SD card reader for the PC.
NOTE: That little M3 SDHC-USB device is absolute shit since any file over 100kb seemed to lock mine up
2.) Copy over the SYSTEM folder for your language type located at http://www.m3adapter.com/SLOT-1_Series_M3i-Zero.ht to the SDHC (English is the top-most link)
3.) Copy over the F_CORE.DAT file (1.6 version) to the root of the SDHC card so you should have the following file structure on your SDHC card...
SYSTEM
F_CORE.DAT
4.) Pop your SDHC card into the M3i and make sure it's fully inserted.
5.) Using the little USB cable, plug in the M3i to your PC and wait for the blinkage. If it doesn't blink or show a solid red, you might have the cable in the wrong way. Make sure the arrows line up.
6.) When it's fully done updating, it will go dark. Unplug it and remove your SDHC (tweezers work best for removing it).
7.) Put your SDHC back into the PC and remove the F_CORE.DAT file and the default SYSTEM folder.
8.) Copy over the SYSTEM folder downloaded from this site at the top and copy it to the root of your SDHC card.
9.) Add a new folder inside SYSTEM called "Games" or whatever you want.
10.) Drop ROMs either inside the "Game" folder or create separate folders for each, it's up to you.
11.) Put your SDHC back into your MI3 and place it into DS.
12.) Start the DS and select the Phantom thingy. Select the Sakura one.
That's it. You should be good to go to play around with the stuff. If you're like me, your menu and such will be in French. The language settings can be reached by using Select or Start, I can't remember which. Google search for how to change skins, etc. and you should be good to go.
Basically, at this point, your MI3 will work like a Windows navigator and allow you to see files/folders. Selecting the games you want will create a save file and load the game just as if you placed the real game in and started it. Good luck, all!

how long did it took you for the m3i zero to come?
I thought I would share something. I added the latest MSakura and core files but my M3i zero card would not flash. I had to remove my sd card, put in a new, unformatted one, and then format and flash. It flashed that way. Apparently, having many files on the other sd was an issue. After formatting and flashing, I removed the new sd and reinserted the old one (once flashed the core file is no longer necessary on the sd). Everything works with the ongoing exceptions of Toy Story and a few other games...remember too not to update your DS to Nintendo's newer os.

But during the game it froze right? Then the game wouldnt start. So I went and grabbed my new sdhc adapter and RAMMED my card in. Long story short. It jammed. I broke a nail. Resorted to teeth. Reduced to bitter anger when it refused to work no matter what.

Our m3i card is intermittently visible in the dsi now. Anyone have any ideas? I took it out and tried it in another machine, and the same thing. Sometimes it is there and other times it says the slot is empty. Boo hoo.

I have a question how can I tell what firmware I have, I have a ds lite.. thats the one without a cam right? well will any of this work for me... I mean before I go out and spend all this money for a m3i and such just wanna know.. please respond.. also I heard you can get internet on ur ds is this true? and how???
If you have a ds lite, you're good to go, you don't have to worry about firmware, and yes there are homebrew applications you can download to your m3i that can allow you to browse the web.
I'm getting the new Mario 25th anniversary dsi xl. do I have to worry about a new firmware update or will I be good to go with current flash cards?
I think you would have a problem with some flash cards.
Depends if the shops update the firmware before you receive it.
Some/Most shops do this.
Or they receive it with updated firmware.
Im not sure which.
Im sure its a safe bet though if this "Mario 25th anniversary dsi xl" is limited that the shops would have received it recently and firmware updated.
And if they did. Then Im sure none/few flashcards will work.

My DSI has firmware version 1.3u. I downloaded the F_CORE.DAT 1.4U version. I have tried numerous times, but my M3i zero will not blink. I get a solid orange light that doesn't go away. I have tried formatting the card & doing the process over many times. Additionally, the thin usb connector connects on the opposite end of what the picture shows. Please help!

So you can get different F_Core.DAT's there and you could maybe try different System files.

No offense. But I now got WiFi (I own it) and quake full version and I cant make sense out of it. Then when I managed to play it. I quit after the 3rd time I went under water and got stuck after getting attacking by an invisible enemy and went into Call Of Duty - Mobilized instead.
So I guess the game isnt ever gonna happen.

Those have some problems. As well as not being supported by some homebrew.
You would have a hard time finding a legit source for 1.3 F_CORE.DAT because of some reason I cannot remember but that there is only 2 websites I know of that are "offical" the M3 Team and their download website alternative.
Also. I Seriously doubt 1.3 F_Core is going to work on your M3i Zero...

I like the idea of having movies on the DS. I've installed the m31 firmware on the micro card (not F_CORE.DAT) and inserted it into the card. I've plugged the little extension in (its on the other side on my m3i zero?? - which i bought though your link a few weeks ago)and connected to the computer, and a red light comes on and stays on but doesn't blink. Im not sure what cover artwork is. But it is only for the flash card and it does not effect your Dsi XL.
If you mean that you wish to change the icon's of the nds files. You cant. It should come with it. For ALL the games.
If you mean you want to change the skin.
Then go into system folder and look for a bunch of files with the extenstion "skn" or something similar.
Just double tap or press "A"
It should change.
You can download more. Just google for it.
Note that this is for M3i Zero.
Should work on M3 Real but other then that.

Also. Some Nintendo Games have something referred to as AP Protection.
This can seriously stuff up your game play. In short. It stops pirated games. However if you own the games then really you should be able to run it right?

It is for M3i and M3 Real cards. Unfortunately it doesnt work on GMP-Z003.
Sadly the guy who made it doesnt want it spread out anymore and this one seems to be the same but I haven't tested it

At the moment though I would not recommend M3i Zero as the people who made it havnt been releasing updates as fast as protection comes out.
So some games do not work without a crack.
Some flashcards do not have this problem.

Hi, I just got the m3i Zero and it's working great so far. There's just one problem though: when I play a game and close my DS (not power it off but just let it sleep), the flashing light that normally comes from that blinks very fast as well as a weird clicking sound occurs like a metronome. Is there any way I can get rid of this??

I know this sounds stupid but i'm a noob at this, how will you be able to download the games? Download then to your sd card and put it back in the m3i zero? I haven't got them yet to try this so i'm hoping this is easy to do.

I will also like to add that in the root of your micro-sd, you could create a folder called NDS and place all your roms there, making them more accessible through the first option on the M3Zero

I think you would have a problem with some flash cards.
Depends if the shops update the firmware before you receive it.
Some/Most shops do this.
Or they receive it with updated firmware.

This is the nintendo DS Xl which i have too. It has firmware 1.4.1E. And the website which i purchased the M3i zero from says, ' M3 team released M3i Zero Core data file 1.4.1x to pass NDSi V1.4.1 firmware.'

I just got am M3i Zero and it's a GMP-Z003 model. The card seems to flash OK, but it's not getting recognized by my DSi XL. The system has firmware 1.4.1 on it, but the newly updated files from http://www.handheldsources.net/M3DS/Download_M3DSR are not working...

Hi, first lemme say thanks. Very nice guide, very easy to understand and the links are much appreciated. I just have a couple of simple questions.
I just ordered my M3i Zero (unfortunately I'm not sure which version it will be when it gets here) and bought a Mario Kart DSi XL bundle. The system version is 1.4.1u Do I need to use the 1.6 F_Core.dat?
Secondly I was wondering about Rom compatibility. If a rom runs on DeSmuME is that any indication of if it will work on the cart?

I think F_CORE.DAT 1.6 would work for your firmware, not entirely sure, haven't purchased the 25th anniversary edition.
And EVERY single NDS ROM works on the M3I Zero, some of them have to be patched first though. If you don't want to deal with ANY PATCHING, get the latest flashcard ---> The Supercard DSTWO, it works decently but I prefer the media capabilities and vast theme support of the m3i
Well, my card showed up amazingly quickly. I ordered it Friday night and I got it Monday afternoon. It's the newer version the Z003. It took a little jiggery pokery to get it to work, I ended up using the 1.6.1 F_Core and I got the Alex Rider Logo instead of Danny Phantom, but it's running beautifully.
I haven't tested every rom I have, but so far the only two that haven't run are the same two that didn't run on my PC, guess I'll have to look for different versions of them. No rush though, I've got plenty to keep me busy for a long time to come. :)

I did look at the Supercard DSTWO, but the price difference coupled with the glowing testimonials for the M3i Zero are what tipped it for me. Maybe in February when I've got a little free money I'll order one and check it out. Meanwhile the M3i is working great for me so I see no reason to worry about having a couple bad Roms. I just downloaded a skin pack for it.
The only thing that bothers me a little is that I couldn't seem to get the Sakura 1.49 working. I downloaded a system folder that was labeled as Sakura 1.49 x 2nd and TouchPod v4.9 or somesuch. And the card wouldn't boot, but when I switched to the 1.48 you linked to it works fine. I'm wondering if it might be because I have the newer version of the card. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this version won't do multiple menus or something.

@shannon - I'm not 100% on this, but I think the newest 1.6.1 F_CORE.dat is supposed to work with all previous firmwares, so you might give that a try. Also, if you have the new GMP-Z003 version of the M3i zero I think it might be the only F_Core that will work at all, maybe the 1.6 but mine didn't work with that one.
@Tamo - Why'd you update the system? I know I'm not Alucard, but I'd assume the problem is that whatever version of F_Core you used to flash the card doesn't work with whatever you updated to. With the assumption that you didn't just upgrade to something new past 1.6.1, try using the 1.6.1 F-Core to re-flash the card, and never ever update the system again if it works. If your system version is now past 1.6.1 you're probably screwed until someone releases a new F_Core for it.
How long does it take 4coolday to ship because mine shipped in 12/15/10 and its 12/29/10 14 days have passed and i got epedited shipping so it should of came sooner.

I plan to buy one DSi XL to my 6year old daughter, so I'm thinking about taking the leap and hack it for her ... and so I have some additional questions regarding usage:
1. I assume the m3i will have the microSDHC with hack software and all games in there, probably one in each directory, correct? So no need to exchange cards at all right?
2. Is it easy for a 6year old kid to turn on and select the games, etc...? I would like her to be able to use the nintendo without effort ... and without the possibility to break the hack in any way, or even ruin the hack card ...

sorry that was a TYPO! The m3i DOES NOT void the warranty in any way. The games must be downloaded, and the software you need for the m3i is on this page! And yes it is very easy for a child to navigate, go to this hub to watch a video of myself using it:

I dont have anything much to offer except a huge tip of the hat. When I first got my m3i card, I was able to find tutorials on how to set it all up, but this was one of the very few that actually had links to files that worked...and it was a huge help. We are using the m3i on a 25th anniversary Mario edition of the DXL, and its just expanded my 7 year old son's machine immensely with the ability to watch video as well as play games.

Thanks to your informative post, I bought the m3i zero for my daughters Nintendo DSi. All this so she can watch movies, and play downloaded games. The day it arrived I was so excited. I followed all your steps with two different SD cards a 4GIG and a 16GIG.
The minute I plugged it into the computer with the firmware cable I got a red solid light. Thinking something was wrong I formatted the SD cards with Panasonic SD Formatter and copied the f_core.dat and the system folder from Sakura. Now I get no lights. I have tried different approaches including inserting a paper in between the DSi and the m3i card.
Please any help to get this working would be greatly appreciated.

LED lights off - no power or complete
LED lights on - error (no "f_core.dat" or wrong file etc.)
The power cable is a pain and very fragile. Make sure the "metal tip" is not bent and its plugged in securely into the m3i card.
If i'm using a g6 flashcard instead of an m3i zero, do i still need to download the same firmware for it?

You can play nds roms, snes roms, genesis roms, nes roms, and much more!
The m3i Zero is my favorite one, but the SuperCard DSTwo has a built in processor in the card, making it faster than the m3i Zero.
But as far as rom compatibility, they're pretty much equivalent.
Oh, ok. Just a few quick questions.
1. how do you set up those other roms?
2. can you play GCN or N64 roms?
3. How do you set up GameBoy/Color/Advance roms?

Hey, I've read through this entire hub hoping to find an answer to my problem, but I can't find anything, I was hoping maybe you can help. I've got an M3i Zero and the green, 25th aniv. DSi, version 1.4.1U, and it works great for about...12-15 games...but after that, any new games added don't work at all. :/
I've reformatted everything, and tried the same exact game files, and they function properly, but yet, when I get to a certain point (number of files? total amount of data they take up?) All of a sudden, no additional games will work. I've even made several folders for games because I read that it can only handle so many files without divvying them up into folders.
Is this just a freak case? Maybe bad System files?
I swear I'm not an idiot, but my gosh, I can't figure this out!
(oh, and I have PLENTY of space on my microSD, so that's not an issue at all)
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!

what class is your SD card?
Well, I have a 32 and a 2. Those are my options. I've only been trying with the 32. I was skeptical if it could handle that much, but the M3i says on the box it supports it. But maybe not?
My phone handles the 32 gig card with no problem, so I'm pretty sure it's not faulty.
i live in Canada and am planning a trip to florida, will there be a problem at customs if i were to take my m3i zero on the plane? Has anyone had any experience with this?

And to be honest, I'm not sure about what class the 32 gig is. I bought that one from China for about $17, so at the time, I really didn't consider it. So I guess I should assume the worst?

@Errinj It really shouldn't be an issue. I think the last thing airports are going to check is what game you have in your DS. :P And I've seen kids on planes playing their DS's all the time. So bringing yours on to a plane should be fine :)

the class of the micro sd card determines the transfer speed, which is particularly important if you are trying to play games on it! An sd card with low class will not be able to render a lot of games on the screen, and sometimes cannot play cut scenes properly, (perfect example is the opening of Dawn of Sorrow)
But yeah, the higher the class, the more your problems go away!
Try all of this over again with the 2 gig card and see what happens!

I've seen they go up to 10, but I didn't know if that might be overkill. And, obviously the higher the better, but that goes hand in hand with prive too. Sooo.... 4, 6, 8, 10?

All the amazon links I place on here are products that I use myself, and I can tell you that everything I use works perfectly! So you can get the 8 gig, 16 gig, or 32 gig. I've used all three!
And I believe they are class 6 cards.

I made it work! I had to use the latest 1.6.1 file to flash. After I flashed, I removed the DAT file and loaded a clean Mr Sakura 1.48 system files.
This was the only combination for my special edition (red) XL.
Josh - format the card, dowload the latest dat (1.6.1)and copy it to the root. Use the USB cable (follow the instructions on polarity) and plug it in. Some of the flash cards start with a solid red for a second or so before starting to flash. Once the flashing stopped you are ready to copy the system folder.

Actually, the SuperCard DSTwo is rather new and what sets it apart mainly is the built in snes and gba emulator! This is because of the built in process that it has, other flashcards cannot emulate gba games unless you attach a ram pack, which can only be done on a DS Lite
And it's funny you ask about the DSTWO because I'm actually going to be reviewing it soon, *the company has sent me one to review*
So yeah, whether you get the m3iZero or the DsTwo, you'll be a happy customer

So.. I followed all the steps, and to now avail. All I get is a black screen when I start the game pack.
Also, another note, instead of the game you say it should display, it shows "Disney/Pixar Finding Nemo Escape to the Big Blue THQ"

It does not cause anything to stop working on the DSi XL, you can still do everything that you could do before it was hacked =D
I've a question. Can I transfer the music from the microsd card directly onto my DS XL? I don't want it all to stay on my sd card, because I also used it for my camera.

I recently bought a DSi XL, an m3i zero card, and a 4gb micro SD card. I followed all your steps to extract the SYSTEM folder and F core into my SD card, and I double checked that I plugged in the thin strip USB cable into my m3i correctly, but the light just stays on and never blinks. I also formatted my SD card a few times and retried everything, but it never blinked. I don't know what's gone wrong!

try it again! Format your SD card, except this time, place only the F_CORE.DAT on your SD card and try to flash it again using the thin strip cable. After that is down, place the "SYSTEM" folder on the microsd.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for your guide. It has proved invaluable in enabling me to set up my M3i Zero card so that I can play lots of lovely games :-D I am due to go on a plane in a few days' time so my DSi XL will keep me entertained at the airport and onboard.
I echo the previous comment from Maker that the game which I click on to load my M3i is "Disney/Pixar Finding Nemo Escape to the Big Blue THQ".
I have a 16gb Sandisk microSD card which contains at least 40 games. I have another empty one which I am hoping to fill with movies by following your hub.

iam having r4.. is dere any difference between m3i software and r4....
Just get the R4 3DS Pocket, insert your (old) microSD card w/ games (yes, even the games you used on your DS lite) and voila - you're good to go! No hacking, modification required. It reads your game files as is. My 9yo daughter is now enjoying her DSi XL, even playing her old DS lite games. :)

Please pardon my ignorance, but I am new to this. I have 3 children. They all have their own DSi. Do I need a separate m3i card for each system? Also, must it be a microSD card? Can't I use the current SD card I have for each system already?

I have followed your guide and am using the 1.8.2 version of the F_CORE.DAT since I have V1.4.2E on my XL. When starting for the first time everything works fine and I am changing the defaul French language to English. I can even start a backup game. When I am done I power of my DSi XL.
Now this is when it stops working...
The next time I start my m3 both screens are just black. When doing a couple of restarts it is still the same most of the time with just black except for one time when the message "NO SD CARD" as showing.
This happens everytime. When repating your above steps I get the same issue. It works the first time but not the second time I try to start the m3.
Anyone had the same issue and solved it?

I have a dsi v1.4.2E i just ordered a r4itt chip the thing is the games came with it just one thing it says error i tried download updater and put it in the ds cart root file and then i put the sd card back in the r4itt and put it back in the dsi turn it back on and the same thing happend i had one question to update it do you have to put it in other ds which works fine with the r4itt card and then update it to v1.4.2 if not right can you send a video link or tell me the steps please i need it my parents ordered it for my birthday but it didnt work can soen one help please

I have the Mario edition dsi Xl and have an R4i card. I updated to the newest kernel, the games loads but freeze at the beginning of game. Is there a fix for the mario edition and R4s? The chip works fine in a non mario edition dsixl.

I've just spent the last hour and a bit reading through all the comments, and I think I've learned a lot. I have a couple of questions though!
1.Do I *have* to use a Micro SDHC? Can I use a normal Micro SD if it has a high enough class?
2. Is the DSTWO a better buy? I know you (Alucard) prefer the M3i, but is the DSTWO easier to use?
3. Do I have to worry about the F_CORE.DAT at all? Or will I be fine with the latest m3i firmware?
4.Will the ROMs I use function as normal games? For example, would I be able to trade Pokemon from a ROM on my DS to a hard copy of the game in my friend's DS?
5.Any tips for formatting the SD card on a mac?

I recently purchased the m3i as you suggested and it appears that my new dsi xl has firmware version 1.4.3a. I have done some research and it says that the new updated firmware hinders the flash cards from working. Is this true?? So does this mean that my new m3i flash card won't work on the 1.4.3a??

just a quick question, im hacking my little brothers dsi for christmas, and i just got the m3i zero today. if i hack it today, and take the card out after im finished, will any new applications be left there even though the card isnt in there? i dont want him finding out ive been doing this for him.

alright thanks, and another question. how come i cant get any emulators or applications to work on the card? im putting them into the root of the sd card. am i supposed to do something to get it all to work or is this flash card just not very compatible. the ds games run flawlessly though

I have a DSI XL. I have been using the M3 zero card for over a year. Everything has been working fine. I turned the DS on a couple of days ago, and it says there is "nothing inserted in the game card slot." Is there anything I can do? Reformat the card?

You haven't let anyone get a hold of your XL have you? They could've possibly updated it. If so, then you would just need to re-flash your m3i with the latest F_CORE.
Otherwise, I would just redo everything like you suggested; just be sure to back up all of your roms, files, etc.

Yes you can. There are varying types of firmware than you can use to flash your m3i zero with based on the firmware of your DSi/XL

I have a DSi with M3i zero gmp-zoo3 and a 8gb Sandisk micro SDHC class 2. All games work great. Now I got a DSi XL, bought another M3i zero gmp-zoo3 and bought a 8gb PNY micro SDHC class 10 and only a few games will work. I can't get Mario Kart and a few others to work.
The problem seems to be the micro SD card because I can put the Sandisk (class 2) in it and it works great. I went to by another one but BestBuy didn't have it, so I bought a 8gb PNY micro SDHC (class 4) and again it doesn't work.... What's the deal??? Is PNY no good? Is it because the class? Do I have to use class 2 to make it work? Could it be a format problem? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks!!!

I'm a bit stuck. I've got a Dsi XL and have successfully flashed several versions of F_CORE.DAT onto the M3. Afterward, I unzipped the SYSTEM folder and placed the whole folder into the main directory of the SD card. When I put the M3 card into the Dsi, I've gotten The Danny Phantom icon, Ubisoft Chess icon, and another one. I'm guessing that is due to the different F_COREs I flashed. But in each case, i get the black screen of death stating that an error has occurred and to turn off the Dsi and consult guide. It almost looks like I have the wrong System file for my 1.4.3U firmware. What can I do?
Well, a bit of searching on the web and I have my answer. Dsi XL firmware 1.4.3u blocks the M3 card. Until the people at M3 release a new F_Core.DAT to work around it, the card is useless. If you own a Dsi and it's older than 1.4.3, don't update it!
Apparently, there is a new F_Core.DAT out there that works. I flashed it in steps (first F_Core, then copy system folder). When installed into the Dsi XL, it shows the M3 as Spongebob in Japanese? Selected it and now it works as you mentioned in your original post. Now I have to figure out the language its in and get it to English (or at least Spanish) Thank you for inspiring this project :)

I own a Nintendo DS i XL and I'm wondering if all the steps are still the same or if there is a new procedure to go by these days? If it is the same are you aware of a video on youtube that will show me how to put the files in the root of the SD card like you mentioned? I am buying the M3i card and one of those memory cards right after my spring break since I figure i will be gone by the time it comes to my place if I ordered it tonight.
The steps are the same as listed. Find and download the current F_CORE for the Dsi XL (especially if its firmware says 1.4.3U) The link above may not be the current version. Download Sakura from the listed link. Unzip F_CORE first and copy it to the SD card. Update your M3i by inserting SD card and connecting the included power adapter. Watch for the LED to blink for about 40 seconds. Wait for light to go off and remove from power adapter. Remove SD card and unzip and copy the Sakura system folder right onto the SD card. When done, you will have only 2 things on the card: the F_CORE file and the SYSTEM folder. Insert SD card into M3i and insert into Dsi and boot. You should see Spongebob in Japanese. Select the game and watch the card boot. Good Luck
im planning to use the R4... and for those who are reading, the r4 gold (or r4i gold) is a clone, so if the roms dont load, or your having trouble doing anything with the R4 gold, its because its a clone, not the real thing.

Can not wait to open it up and play my gameboy games, well really just yellow version and the fire emblem sacred stones that the DSI XL wont let me play because there isn't a GBA game slot. WildChild91, I was having the same problem. When you downloaded the F_CORE.DAT file, did it have numbers in front of it? If so remove the numbers and then try it. It worked for me.
My daughter has a DSi XL and everything worked fine. My nephews have DS Lites and the M3 card will not flash, just stays red. According to the instructions, I should have the System folder and the games, no F_CORE, correct.
