So what all can a Wii really do?
A LOT! Like you wouldn't believe, your Wii is a treasure chest waiting to be opened! Follow my guide and you'll be able to:
- Play Wii games from an external hard drive or flash drive using usb loader gx
- Watch DVD Movies on your Wii (Newer Wii's cannot play dvd-r's due to a different dvd drive)
- Have access to literally hundreds of homebrew apps made just for the Wii such as custom music and movie players, homemade games such as QuakeWii and Super Mario War, and other neat stuff!
- Use a wad manager to install all the cool classic games on the shop channel without having to pay for them!
- Use emulators to play playstation, N64, sega genesis, nes, snes, and even sega saturn games on your Wii!
- Use PriiLoader Hacks to customize your Wii, including the abilitiy to remove the background music and the annoying health warning screen, and you can even move the disc channel!
- Play gamecube games burnt to a DVD-r on your Wii! (unless you have a newer Wii)
- Hell, you can even run Linux on your Wii!
- And much more...!
*** NOTE: This Guide is only for Wii's with firmware 4.2. If your Wii is 4.3, refer to my other guide here! ***
What you need
Okay, so there is a lot of stuff that you'll need to download in order to properly hack a Nintendo Wii. Instead of making you go through all the trouble of locating all of these files individually, I've put them all together in one download, click here
I take no credit for all the hard work it took to create these files, I am simply providing them at your convenience. To view the original guide click here
Now, if you do not have a way to unzip .rar files, you'll need winrar or something equivalent, I recommend 7zip, because it's free and works just as well as anything else. Click here to download it.
Once 7zip is installed, you'll be able to right click the "4.2 Wii everything you need.rar" file and click extract using 7zip. Extract the contents of the .rar file to the root of an SD card, preferably a 2 gigabyte one or larger, since that's also most likely where your roms and other neat stuff will go. If you don't have an SD card, purchase one below, and you'll have everything you need. Watch my two-part video guide below or continue reading to start hacking your wii!

Time to hack!
Before doing anything, insert your SD card (with the contents of the .rar file on it) and remove any gamecube controllers and memory cards. Turn on your Wii and verify that it has an internet connection, because your Wii will need to download essential files during the hacking process. Also verify that your Wii has firmware 4.2. You can do this by clicking the "Wii Options" button on the bottom-left of the screen and then click "Wii Settings" on the right. Your firmware version will be on the top-right. Now you're ready to start:
- On the Wii menu, click the "SD card icon" on the bottom. It'll load your SD card and then a message window will pop up asking you if you want to install boot.dol/elf? Click yes
- After reading the disclaimer and pressing "1" to continue, press A and then scroll up to where it says homebrew channel and press A to install it. If you want to back up your Wii's NAND to insure it doesn't get bricked, click here for the guide on that (step 2). If not, press exit at the bottom to be taken to the homebrew channel screen.
- Find the program called "Dop Mii" and click that to run it, once there, click "Install IOS36 with fakesign. Press A to continue and then press A again to downgrade (only works if your Wii is connected to wifi) After that, simply keep pressing A to confirm everything until it is done. It will ask to apply patches and to install more stuff, just click yes for everything.
- After that is done, return to the main screen, or run "Dop Mii" again if you have to. This time, click the first option, "IOS 36", and then select "IOS." Scroll right until you see IOS 222 at the top. Press the "minus button" on your wii remote to uninstall it. Do the same for 223, 249, and 250. DO NOT UNINSTALL ANYTHING ELSE! Return to the homebrew menu screen.
- Now it's time to install custom firmware, woo hoo! On the homebrew menu, find the program called "cIOS38-rev14 Installer" and run it. Press A to use IOS 36 and then select network or wad install. Either works fine. Once this is done, exit and return to the homebrew menu.
- Find your "Wad Manager" program, it'll most likely be on the last page in your homebrew menu. Run that and select IOS249. Use the Wii SD Slot, and make sure NAND is disabled. You'll need to install the following wads:
- IOS53-v5406 [TB].wad
- IOS55-v5406[TB].wad
- IOS60patched.wad
- IOS70-patched.wad
7. The last step is to install "priiloader". Run it from the homebrew channel and press "+" on your Wiimote to install it. Keep in mind that this is optional and is only necessary if you want system menu hacks such as removing the background music or the health screen. You can configure your priiloader hacks by holding the reset button while turning your Wii on. The priiloader also comes in handy if your Wii ever gets "bricked," because you can access it before the Wii's critical files boot and possibly restore them.

 | Flash drives are easier to carry around, and they can hold about 10 Wii games. I recommend using an external hard drive over using a flash drive unless you don't plan on storing a lot of games. Amazon Price: $16.36 List Price: $58.95 |
Playing Wii Games from an external hard drive
Honestly, isn't this why you wanted to hack your Wii to begin with? Don't lie to me, haha. Playing Wii games from my external hard drive is honestly one of the coolest things about having a hacked Wii. No more inserting or scratching discs, just click and play! Just make sure you actually own the original copy of a game before you download it.
In order to do this, you'll need an external hard drive of some kind, I recommend the 320 gigabyte Western Digital Passport, as it is the one I personally use. You can easily fit 100 Wii games on it, so you don't need anything bigger than that.You could also use a flash drive if you wanted to be able to carry your games in your pocket or something. You can fit about 10 Wii games on a 32 gigabyte flashdrive. To read my full guide on how to play Wii games stored on an external hard drive or flash drive, click here!
Homebrew!
There are so many homebrew apps to choose from when it comes to the Wii. Download the homebrew browser, it's a nice app to put on your wii that acts as a client to download pretty much any other homebrew! Other than that, here a couple sites I use to find new homebrew:
Movies and Music on your Wii!
To play movies or listen to music on your Wii, you'll need a homebrew app. There are lots of different types available, but I recommend:
To install apps, simply download the app, and make sure you place the folder in the "apps" folder on your sd card. The name of the program folder doesn't matter, as long as there is a file named "boot.dol" in it. It can't be named anything else! The same goes for ALL homebrew apps, that is, anything in the "apps" folder!
If you would like to install WiiMC as a channel that appears on the system menu, follow these steps:
- Download the WiiMC Channel Installer, here!
- Run the WiiMC channel Installer, install it
- Return to the Wii system menu and voila!
Installing Channels to the Wii
Using the WAD MANAGER, you can install pretty much anything you'd normally buy from the Wii Shop Channel. Hopefully, you aren't a pirate and steal, but essentially the WAD MANAGER can be used for just that. I believe the idea behind it is that if at one point you owned the game/channel, but lost your account, the wad mananger is an easy way to get back what's rightfully yours. Since Nintendo doesn't approve homebrew on the Wii to begin with, I suppose it really doesn't matter how we try to justify it, haha!
In my video guide above, I show you how to install a virtual console game via the WAD Manager, so simply skip to the end of Part 2 if you are having trouble with it.

Thought Nintendo would have Wii's in different colors within the first year. Wanted a Black one to begin with, but bought one in 2007. Hacked it with the Twilight hack back then. Already have a compatible hard drive with 129 Wii Games on it.

I followed your guide, but now whenever I try to play a game from usbloader I get a black screen and the wii freezes. The same thing happens when I try to open the internet channel. I tried the original games that came with the wii (wii sports and sports resort) and the only one that works is wii sports. Do you have any idea what might have gone wrong?
funny! same thing happened to me recently because I updated my shop channel, I want you to run your "DOPMII" again, and check all those IOS's I told you to install
For each one, check the right side of the screen, if it says "stub" or something of that nature, uninstall it.
More specifically, check IOS 249, *since I believe that is the problem to begin with* and uninstall it.
After that run the cios rev14 installer again
and you should be good to go! let me know how it turns out!

On new Black Wii, when starting Nintendo Channel, and Internet Channel the screen goes black and does not load.

if you're using a black wii, neogamma isn't going to work, burnt dvds do not work, and there is no way around it. Newer wii's have a different dvd drive than the older ones.

yes, you can play imports easily! There are plenty of apps available for doing so!

some wads i run turn the screen black and the controller shuts off and doesnt turn back on, i have to manually hold the power button. I opened DOP-MII and uninstalled the stubs 222,223,249,250 like you said. ive read about some forums and havent found anything about wiiware wads

If you are using a black wii, don't worry about backing up your nand, and as long as you don't do anything stupid like uninstall an ios you aren't supposed to, backing up your nand is pretty pointless

hey i have 4.2u n did softmod not to long ago...wii resort i can not get to work for the life of me! i even did the uninstall 249...i get this beeep noise after it loads n shows it in the channel. when i first heard it i said o great its not gonna work...please help!

Well , like others i followed your guide to hack the wii 4.2u and like others i have lost the use of the internet channel , shop channel and i can not play any cd's other than wii sports! I just bought tigerwoods pga 10 and can't play it either. Whats up with that? It happened right after i did your hack guide. How do i restore it back to factory? I backed up before i did anything. So i have the original files.
dude, update your Wii, and then uninstall ios249 again, and then reinstall the cios. and everything will work again

Alucard... Dont worry about my last post, i followed your guide to format mem stick and load games to it. My new tiger woods is up and running off usb. I dont care if the original cd's run or not. The wii cd drive is working fine for loading. AND THAT IS ALL I CARE. Thank you for your time and effort you put into your videos and text guides. YOur the man and im now a happy wii owner.
I have one more question, I have a Cavalry 1TB external HD it is half full of my music, movies, and pictures. Do you think i could partition it (with everything still on it) and format that partition only to put the wii games on. Or do you think that will cause problems or run to slow while playing a game off it? I want to use the HD on both the wii and my pc when im done.
yes, you can partition your hard drive into two halves and use half of it for games and the other half for media. This is what I do for mine so that I can use half of it for storage and the other half for my games. It's great because I can play my movies and music off the storage partition using WiiMC on my Wii

@jim, I know it sucks to find out that after the hack is installed you can't read (play) some games (via the CD channel). So far Wii Sports and WORMS will load and play in the cd rom. But my Tiger Woods 2010 and Wii Sports resort will show up on the cd channel but will black screen when i try to play them. So far the only thing i can think of being the problem is that the games that won't read are "motion plus" games and the other two (that play)are not. This has to be the reason. You should move on to the "Format Hard Drive and Use USB Loader" part of the guide. You will find that your cd rom drive works FINE on all games when installing them to your external HD. So my point is, who really cares if you can "play" games from the CD channel when you can now play them from your HD. This is the reason we hacked our Wii's :)

that hdd's are really cheap considering all the games you can put on them. Go to my "hard drive" guide on use the link there to order yours. Its called the Western Digital 320 GB harddrive, its the cheapest and best hard drive to use for playing wii games

as for your Wii, do not update it to 4.3, it is very difficult to hack it once it is on 4.3, 4.2 is good, but if you're on 3.4, leave it there and use another guide

But the Netflix Instant Streaming disk is not working! This is practically the only thing the Wii is used for right now! I need help to get it running again!
On another note, when WAD manager was not working, I had installed using the wrong IOS in the cIOS38-rev14 Installer. But when I tried using Netflix when those IOS's were installed, it worked.

Hey I tried this on my european wii it´s a 4.2 but instead of being like yours (4.2 US) It´s a 4.2E. and i have the same problem as one of the people that commented above. whenever i try to run anything the wii freezes and the screen goes black. Even with the original games! And I tried to uninstall everything but now I have an even bigger problem... the homebrew channel doesn´t have anything in it!! And when i try to access the sd slot it says that what´s in it can be read...
I´m fucked aren´t I? LOL xDD
Anyways i´m downloading everything again on a different SD to see if it works... I´ll let you know if everything goes alright.

Hi again..you need not answer the question I've post earlier cuz now I've mistakenly upgraded my wii to 4.3 :(( and the guide to softmodding 4.3 confuse the hell outta me cuz am a noob at this, am stuck now I guess I'll just have to go to a shop a pay them to softmod it for me (hope they dont mess it up)if I dont find the solution this week

I followed step by step and I got to the step to install wad manager. When I load it, iso249 is by default, however, when I press a to continue, my system freezes, I tried it twice and the same thing. I never get to the screen.......what did I do wrong, can I restart from step 1? please help...

I got an old white wii (like 2 year old or something)
and I softmodded it a while ago (I tought version 4.1E) but a few months back my dad wanted the originall of super mario galaxy 2 so it had to be updated so I just updated from the disc and was unnable to use usb loader (duh). yesterday I had the time and I updated my wii (finally) and everything works fine, except it takes a LONG* (*really long) time toload games and cutscenes. for example if you play DBZ budokai tenkaichi 3 or something and it takes 20 minutes to load a fight and a fight is over in like 2 mins -.- thats not really enjoyable now is it :P I didnt use youre guide tough, but i wondered if u know something to help this? Oh BTW it used to run normally with the same external harddisk it happened since the update.

Got Lego Indiana Jones and was finally able to softmod my 4.3u successfully :), I did said I'll let you know if I successed or not. Now am able to play from external hard drive which is cool only problem is I got scammed by 'mywiidownload.com' I paid premium membership for their site (which is unlimited downloads with lifetime membership)but they denied me access..been trying to loggon to their site everyday since but no luck, am in talks with my credit card company...if they dont deliver then I can get back my money..just hates this kind of sites

Ah yeah!! thanks man it worked ! i deleted the stubs and then installed urs they load perfectly now =) the only thing i notice is thatif I run DOPMII it still says the IOS's are stub versions but it works fine now so I don't think it can hurt :) well thanks annyway !!

All done just messing with a few apps,i am running the coverloader app can i get that onto the main menu? i have it running but i have to go into the homebrew channel to get it,i also noticed that it wont read any of my actual wii discs i get an unable to read error,any ideas? other than that thanks for the help great page.

Thanx for your very good guide. It works like a dream. However i'm having problems with Sports Resort. It doesn't matter how i try to start it (via disk channel or usb loader), my tv goes black and wii remote goes "offline".
If i try to start sport resort in usb loader and change from game settings alternate DOL to player.dol, game will
go to "movie menu" and if i press "Return to Game" my tv goes black and wii remote goes again "offline". And my Motion plus is correctly connected.
Sport resort is only game what i have that needs Motion plus, so i dont know how other Motion Plus games would work.
My wii's firmware in 4.2E and i have done everyhing like your guide says, except i didnt install priloader. All my games are from original disc, so they should work
(and they had before softmod). Please help me, with this issue.
I noticed a few games,not all but a lot give the blue screen with error #002,i am using cover floader,is there any fix for them all without using the neogamma and pressing 1,or can this only be fixed game by game

Ok for all with my issue with the blue screen error #002,go to coverfloader,pick a game that aint working but before you hit load go to the settings in the bottom left (i think) its the little cog wheel looking thingy and in there is the 002 fix,

@osomara, yes this guide will work for you on a black 4.2 wii, but no you will not be able to boot DVD's from a disc. But you can still watch movies and play games by storing them on a hard drive.

You are using a disc and this is the problem, the whole point of this guide was to hack your wii and not have to use discs at all. However, if you really want to be able to play Wii Sports Resort using the disc, you will need to load up "Dop-Mii" in the homebrew channel. From there, delete ios249 and reset the Wii. Doing this defeats the purpose of this entire guide, but your disc will work.

am looking to get a Wii... and have been reading all the comments.
This is all completely new to me with the Wii... although i have done the downloading etc of games for DS's ...There is mention of a number of programs... to run on the Wii. Do any of these have to have access to the internet to run on the wii?? We don't have highspeed where we live :(( just want to be sure of the things i need to install or not to install.

I have went through all the steps, and everything works great, except the usb loader keeps getting stuck, it will show it to me in the channels but when I click it it shows me words and then at the bottom it says reloading 5 and then it says reload. what should I do.

Hey man i followed your vid. and i now believe in magic. i haven't tested out any games yet but i will in a few days when the external reaches. But im having 2 problems(well one's not really an issue i think)
1) I wanna install priiloader but every time i go to install it i get "unauthorized to get ticket, is ios58 trucha signed?....aborting"
2)when i try to install ios36 (v3351) w/FakeSign
everything downloads perfectly until i get to the end and it has a bunch of errors like
"error! failed to restore ios36 to v3551"(but everything else like cIOS38r14 installed fine , Is this really an issue?)
and i have bootmii but it is installed as an ios i believe so i want priiloader to be safe.

when installing PriiLoader, hold "B" and then press the "+" button, as for the ios36 fakesign, yeah that's a pretty major issue!
you shouldn't have done ANY of the other steps if you didn't get that to work, I'll be surprised if you can get USB Loader GX working, lemme know how it goes

I follow all the step on 4.1 wii all ok do the same thing on 4.2 but every thing on the process go threw but when I plug the hdd (the same that is working on the 4.1 ) nothing appear in gx loader menu said the wii froze need to unplug to reboot any idea what went wrong try the process 2x also install gx loader as wad same thing $%??&&
if nothing appears on the usb loader gx, then you need to reinstall custom firmware
but first, go to DOPMII and uninstall ios249
and no this guide does NOT work on 4.1, you might get far with it, but eventually you will hit a snag, the 4.1 guide is quite different

and for the usb loader as well as neo gamma they load perfectly. still haven't tried games a of yet those.... still download :P

you need to use USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder, this one acts like a shortcut to the program installed on your SD CARD, the other one simply installs the program to your wii itself and is sort of clumsy, only use it if you need your SD card for something else

BUT when I load games on the USB with my flash drive, the game will load into the starting segment and when going into like the 1st scene in the game it would stop loading. The screen then remains black until I hold down power and power back on. I've got a white Wii 4.2u. Do you know what should I do?

Feel like an idiot. Im new to this stuff but the instructions seem pretty simple....But, everytime i try to extract the files of 4.2 wii everything you need, onto my brand new 8gb sdhc sandisk card formatted to fat32, it gives me an error. When it gets to the WAD folder, the file "Use loader GX r907.wad" gives some kind of I/O error and wont finish. Any advice?

I have a situation for you.... I previously had hacked my wii 4.2u using a video on youtube, and everything was working great for the last year. I haven't ever allowed my system to upgrade as a precautionary measure to avoid undoing everything I had done. A couple of months ago my Homebrew channel quit working and I just figured I missed an updated version no big deal, whatever. Then just a few days ago Christmas eve, the usb loader quit working. I would click on it and would just go black and not do anything afterward. So I sought out your page and saw quite an impressive hack far better than the one I previously used. i deleted the homebrew and neogamma channels that weren't working and proceeded to try your hack. Nothing happend when I clicked on the SD Card. I formatted the SD fat 32 and tried again. Nothing. Then I formatted the Wii memory, thinking that it would restore all system settings and tried it again. Still, nothing happens when I load up the SD card from the home screen just like the video. Any tips on what I should do?
A friend helped me hookup Wii Flow several months ago. This was working fine until someone put a game in the Wii & played instead of downloading it to the harddrive. Now when I click on Wiii Flow, the screen goes black. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks
Anyone know how i can make homebrew apps i download to display as channels so i dont have to go to the hombrew menu to start them? I have the nes, supernes and genesis emulators. But i have to go to homebrew channel to load them. I put them on there for my kid.... i dont want him messing around in my homebrew menus. He will blow something up. Any way to make these display as channels like the mario wad from this tutorial?

yes I install bootmii as an ios. I cannot install bootmi v2. also i notice when I hold down power and reset button to enter Priiloader, on system menu hacks is saying couldn't find any system hacks for system menu version :v449.

I tell you what James, you are most likely NEVER going to need to do that, just make sure you take off any damaging programs like "DOP-MII" or cios installers or wad managers so that someone doesn't get on your wii and mess something up.
As long as you block any means to destroy your Wii from naive users, your wii can't be broken.

Hi again Alucard,not sure if this is your department but ill try,my friend has a wii 4.1 and looks to be fully hacked with homebrew etc. if i add my external drive with games to it all works fine,but if i format a new drive and add games it only goes as far as load screen then crashes with black screen so im wondering should i just upgrade it to 4.2 and run this hack since im familiar with it or would i brick it by adding one hack over another?

Yeah i was using wbfs but i went messing with it after that yesterday and made a big error and think i bricked his wii,i aint too worried cause he got the wii for free so he wont go too nuts,is there any fix for a brick,black screen as soon as it goes on (and no nand backup)
Also i didnt run the 4.2 hack i ran this 4.1 guide http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tu i got down as far as step 4.(b) and got the error that it says in the guide ( Browse to your WAD folder and install IOS60Patched.wad, check that it installs with no errors and exit Wad manager),i closed down everything properly but when i rebooted later i was left with the poxy black screen

the point of this hack is to NOT USE DISCS, hack your wii, and then install your Wii Resort to the harddrive using the Usb Loader Gx, and then you don't NEED THE DISC ANYMORE
If you're wanting to use your disc to play the game, then this guide is useless to you sir

I installed the game to my HDD and it does show up in the USB loader but when i click on the disc to play it gives black screen and some green light on the top edge of the screen... funny thing is i tried to run the disc from Neogama and it worked fine... wii resort worked there...
Q: Will this be the case for my downloaded ISO too... do i have to burn the disc and play that ways... or am i missing some steps in the usb loader??... this is specifically for wii resort .. have'nt tried any other yet/

yes, you need to have the SD card in at all times to play games and run the homebrew channel.
And with Wii Sports Resort make sure the Wii motion plus is attached before starting the game.
Question Alucard followed guide with ease everything works but when i load game from external hdd it comes on & your able to play but it has snow and a dark line going up to down like if theres some sort of interference there is sound but snowy picture is white and black any ideas alucard???

that is because the particular game you are playing is a PAL copy of the game.
Load up usb loader gx, click on the game, but DO NOT CLICK ON THE DISC TO START IT, instead, click the settings button on the bottom left of the pop-up window, from there, click "game" and change the "video mode" option to FORCE NTSC.
This should take care of your problem. The only game it didn't work for on my Wii was Pikmin 2

This can work on ANY GENERATION WII, as long as the firmware is 4.2
I will be writing a guide soon on how to hack a 4.3 Wii, but for now you'll have to use this. Check your firmware and make sure it is 4.2 before using this guide!

hold reset while pressing the power button on your Wii. Make sure your Wii is off first of course. If a screen comes up, your Wii is not totally screwed.

- had to repeat step 3 "Install IOS36 with fakesign" a couple of times, most likely because of wifi connection problem.
- Wii Sports Resort from CD does not work. (discussed many times above) and starts a wii system update which we do not want!

When ripping Wii discs, the disc must be in almost pristine condition. You probably have some scratches preventing a smooth installation.

Hey bro I have been looking for help with this problem forever. I have a soft modded Wii with USB Loader ext hard drive with about 95 games. It has been working fine for about two years. About two weeks ago a game froze while playing on ext hard drive. This had occurred in the past some times and all I would have to do is unplug the Wii. After the unplug I turned the Wii on but now my controllers will not sync. I have tried new batteries and about 15 sync procedures so I know for sure there is something wrong because they will not sync. Blue LED's blink bright but will not sync. Today I tried the candal trick thinking it might be the sensor bar but that didn't work either. The Wii turns on and goes to the wii menu but I cannot sync with any of my two controllers. I have tried unplugging everything and reseting the sync memory (hold sync for 15 seconds) but still no luck. I am lost and frustrated. Can you help? Thank you for all the great info and time!!!

Turn on the Wii, while it is on the Health Screen, open the SD Card slot. Press the red button that sits by the SD slot. After that, press the red button inside the battery cover. The Wii Remote should sync.
Tried that one. Doesn't work but I did try it again. Would you even need the sensor bar to sync the wii remotes. I was thinking the sensor bar was messed up so I tried the candle trick but that also didn't work. I have been looking on all types of threads for help with nothing. A wierd thing that happens also is when i try to turn off the wii by pressing the power button, the screen goes black like its trying to turn off but gets stuck on the black screen. The green LED stays green and doesn't turn back to red. I have to hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds then it goes red. Thanks for the reply and all the help!

Just to clarify, your Wii is not bricked is it? Try holding the reset button while pressing the power button.

Actually, when I tried that before, it just boots up into the wii menu screen. It seems that does absolutely nothing. I was also thinking some memory had been corrupt and maybe its been bricked but seems like everything is working except the wii motes. I was thinking of flashing the wii but how could I if I don't have wii mote's? Thank you!
After trying to run/install DOPMii, after going through the network search, the epiletic flashing I was presented with a pile of numbers under 3 headings; Exception DSI occurred, Stack dump and code dump???? Everything prior to this was as per your guide.

hi i used your guide about 2 years ago all is good .. but last 3 week ago a black screen came up my wii controller not sysc with wii and when i go to priiloader i go to the menu but wi will not let me select anyting i use a gc controller it works but when i go to hc it says error autoboot maybe title not installed ..

If you extract the files from the zipfile to your PC first they are placed in a folder called "4.2 Wii ROOT". You need to browse into this folder and copy the contents of it, not the actual "4.2 Wii ROOT" folder. Paste the files into the root of your SD card. You should see the boot.elf, hacks.ini, etc files in the root of the SD card.
If you do this then the Wii will see the files.

The hacks are meant to be used with an external hard drive. You could always burn the games to disc and play them using Neo Gamma, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that, it is annoying to have to swap out discs all the time.
But to answer your question, yes.
