How to Play Wii games stored on an external hard drive or flash drive
91
What is the USB LOADER GX?
It is basically the best homebrew ever made, it allows your Wii to access and play games stored on an external hard drive or flash drive. It all started with Waninkoko's original backup loader, back when half the games didn't work, and there wasn't a fancy looking GUI, just text. We have come so far. You're lucky to just now be joining the scene now that everything is perfected. All you gotta do is sit back and enjoy!
And don't worry, setting it up is easier than you think, just follow this short guide and you'll be gaming in no time at all! There are also two videos on this page to assist you. This guide assumes that your Wii has already been hacked, if not, please see my "How to hack a 4.2 Nintendo Wii" hub.

Setting up an external hard drive to play Wii games
Before you do anything, you're gonna need an external hard drive. I recommend you get the Western Digital Passport 320 gigabyte external HDD. I have provided an amazon link to the right. They will hold about 100 Wii games, and honestly, you don't need any more than that. They have the widest compatibility when it comes to Wii games, as it plays the majority of them without any flaws. It is also the cheapest and most compact external HDD you're gonna find on the market. Once you have everything you need, follow these steps:
- From your desktop, or from the start button on the bottom-right, right-click "My Computer" and click "manage"
- On the left, under the "storage" tab, click "Disk Management"
- You should now see all the drives connected to your computer. Find your external hard drive and right-click it and click "delete volume"
- Now right-click it again and this time click "new simple volume"
- You will be taken to a new window. It will ask you how much memory to dedicate to the partition. Leave this field at its default and click continue unless you plan on using this drive for something other than playing Wii games.
- This is the most important step! When it asks you how to format the drive, click the option that says "Leave it unformatted." This gives your external HDD a RAW partition.
- After you are done, right-click your external hard drive and click "mark partition as active" Your screen needs to look something like mine does in the picture.
- Once you are done, and your external hard drive has a raw partition, you'll need the WBFS Manager to format your drive to play Wii games. The version of WBFS manager you need depends on whether your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit. Download the "x86" version if your computer is 32 bit or "x64" if your computer is 64 bit. Click here for the WBFS Manager download page. If you do not know which one to download, right-click the computer icon on your desktop and click "properties", you'll be presented with a screen similar to the one on the right (at least if you are using Vista or Windows 7, otherwise a shitty window).
- If you do not have a means of extracting files from an archive, such as the zip file you just downloaded, you'll need to install 7zip. Once you have 7zip, right click the zip file you downloaded in step 8 and click extract with 7zip.
- Once you have the WBFS manager on your computer, run it and choose the drive letter that represents your drive. Now click "format" and the WBFS manager will format your RAW drive to play Wii games.
- Now all you have to do is plug the external hard drive into your Wii and run the USB LOADER GX. If you don't have that on your Wii, you'll need it. I provide everything you need for your Wii here. These are the same files I provided in my "How to hack a 4.2 Nintendo Wii" hub. So if you already downloaded that and followed my guide, you can either run the usb loader gx from the homebrew channel or run the wad manager and install the usb loader gx forwarder WAD. If you install the wad, you'll be able to access the usb loader from the Wii menu just like any other channel.
How to Play Wii games from a flash drive
* If you are using an external hard drive, scroll down to "Using the USB Loader GX" *
Steps 1 through 7 above would not work for a flash drive, which is why it is in its own section. To use a flash drive to play Wii games, you have to trick your computer.
- Order the flash drive to the right, it's cheap and holds about 10 Wii games. If you already have one, try and use that first before ordering another one.
- Plug in your flash drive and click "My Computer"
- Right-click your flash drive and click "Format"
- Make sure "Quick Format" is checked at the bottom of the window and then click format. Wait about 2 seconds after it has started formatting and remove the drive. If you did it right Windows will give you an error message saying it was unable to complete the format.
- Plug your drive back in, You should receive a message telling you that your drive must be formatted before it can be used. Click cancel. Now you need to follow steps 8 through 11 above. ^^^^^^^
Using the USB Loader GX
Using the USB Loader is pretty simple. Once you have your hard drive or flash drive hooked up, simply run the USB Loader GX and insert one of your Wii games into the disc drive. When you do, a message will pop up saying "New Disc Detected." Use your wiimote and click "INSTALL." You'll see a bar showing the progress of the installation. After it finishes installing, you will now be able to play the game you inserted from the hard drive or flash drive. This means you no longer have to use discs to play games. Back up the rest of your Wii games to your external hard drive or flash drive.
When you are all done installing your games. Press "1" on your Wiimote and a window will pop up. You can download the box art and disc covers of all your games. Your Wii will need an internet connection in order to do this of course, so make sure that is set up beforehand.
Now all you have to do is click a game and play it! There a few games that do not work, or require certain settings in order to work. Below I will go into detail about two such cases.
How to get Monster Hunter 3 and Red Steel 2 to work
These are two of the newest Wii games, and everyone has been complaining about how they don't work on the USB Loader GX, myself included. Well, I figured it out, and I am going to share with you how to get them working:
Monster Hunter 3
- You will need the Hermes cIOS 222 installer v4, but it should already be on your SD card, if not, there is a link to it on this page in step 11 above and also in my "How to hack a 4.2 Nintendo Wii" hub.
- Run the homebrew channel, and run the cIOS 222 installer v4. Use IOS 249 for the install.
- Select "Install Custom IOS 223
- Now Select "Use IOS 38 merged with IOS 37" See the picture to the right --->
- Once the installation process is complete, run the usb loader gx.
- Click Monster Hunter Tri, and click "Settings" and then click "Game Load"
- Scroll down to where it says IOS, and configure it to use IOS 223, and then click save at the bottom-right and you're done!
Red Steel 2
- This one is a little tricky, but you don't need to download anything so that's good. Before doing anything, make sure you have motion plus attached to your WiiMote.
- Run the USB Loader GX and click Red Steel 2
- Click "Settings", and then click "Game Load"
- Now scroll down to where you see "Alternate DOL" and configure it to say "Select a DOL"
- Now scroll down to the very next option and click it, and click the "Player.DOL"
- Now your screen should look like the picture to the right --->
- When you launch the game, you'll have to watch a 3 minute video, when that's over, the Wii will save and restart. Now go back to the usb loader and change the setting on Red Steel back to what they were before. Where it says "Alternate DOL" it should say "Default"
- And now when you launch the game, it'll skip the video and you can actually play the game!

iam now trying to download more i am getting them from btjunkie- using utorrent- and unraring them without problems. but when i try to send the ciso file to my external hard drive i get a message saying i need to format the disk. i am worried i will lose the games that are on it all ready. can u help??????

Thanks man, your guide made it really easy to hack it and play with a USB Pen Drive. I have a question: Can i play Pal Games with this loader?
Thanks!
Thanks again!
I need your help. I can´t run Metroid Other M past the training. I read that it needs IOS 222. How can i install it ? I did the install for 223 using the tutorial for Monster Hunter but i only get a black screen trying to run Metroid using it. Please, write me at b_malta@hotmail.com
Thank you very much!
Ok..i managed to instal IOS 222 but it still gives me a black screen. I tried using "Pimp my Wii" to check the IOS and the thing froze at the IOS 55.
Well, i used all the data you provided in your pack. I think the IOS is de Hermes one V4. Firmware is 4.2.I Actually used your faq to hack it. The only program i used outside yours was the Pimp My Wii.
Oh..about the IOS 222 i think it was base 38 (the recommended one).
Yes, i am. That is when i get the Black Screen. With the 222 and 223 i only get a black screen, the wii motion does not flash and it does not seem to hang up the console but no image appears. With the normal ios like 249 or 250 i can play but it gives me a Disc Erros after the training part. I read somewhere that i would need ios 56 but i think i got that one already since it is the same one used to play Mario Galaxy 2 which runs fine for me.
This problem seems to occur on Dual Layer discs since Metroid Other M and Smash Bross are the only game i have problem running. Do you think i should do the whole hacking process again?
Ok..thanks for the tip. I will try to do this latter tonight and then will let you know if it worked out.
Hi. I've had a hacked Wii for about 8 months, but recently some of the new games are telling me that the Firmware needs to be upgraded. I know not to do this from the menu, as I will likely lose my hacks.
How do you get the Wii to upgrade to support these new games? If I copy the game to the Hard Drive and try to run it, it just locks up.
Thanks a bunch.
Man...your idea worked hehehe. I just can´t believe it. Thank you so much!
I followed your steps and everything seemed to work fine. I formatted my hard drive using WBFS and it worked. Now when I try to simply click and access my hard drive it says i can't because it isn't formatted. Any suggestions?
Ok so the overall goal here is to be able to download a game from the internet and then store it on my external hard drive then play it on the wii. Is there a guide on how to do this or a site to get the correct game files that will easily transfer from the manager to the hard drive?
I also got to the step where I deleted the volume on the drive. But now Windows7 isn't recognizing the drive and I don't see the drive anywhere under disk management within computer management. Help!!
I've restarted my computer and reinstalled the driver and I still don't see it under disk management. However, I do see it under device manager --> disk drives, and says that the drive is working properly. I'm stuck!
Worked! Got it to format correctly. Now I just need to finish installing the homebrew browser to get all of this to work together. Thanks again!
Hey man thanks for the help. I only tried 2 games cos i literally just got it done.
one of my games just comes up as a green screen and wont load though.
One thing. I have a 2tb drive now that will work with the Wii but I cant backup my movie colection on it haha. Im sure there is something simple to do to fix this. hopefully. thanks for the help.
i have never researched this before given this guide, and i must say that it worked flawless on the black wii 4.2U.
Thanks
I used your video and it works awesome and I love it.. But when I load the usb loader i have to wait for the USB app to load then plug the hard drive in. It works great. And if I want to switch the game I go back to the wii menu go to the USB loader and load it. Then I have to go unplug the hard drive and replug in. Is there a way that I can leave it pluged in all the time so I dont have to unplug and replug everytime I want to play a different game.. I have a 3 year old who wants to switch games every 5 min and it gets anoying LOL Help me.
will this multiplayer online fix work with configurable usb instead of usb loader gx
Does it matter which usb loader off your wad to install
Cause there is the USB loader GX r907.wad and the USB loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder.wad I installed the forwarder one.. does it matter maybe thats whats going on.
Hmmmm okay well let me know if there is a reason I have to unplug and plug back in the hard drive everytime.. Plus I used your download to play black ops and when I go to the wad installer I dont see it on there. but if I pull up the wad folder on my 2G sd card its on there. Do I need to do something for my wii to see it. I downloaded it right to the sd card too.
I got the call of duty working so just the external hard drive question.. You are awesome for figuring all this stuff out
Did you ever find anything out about unpluging and pluging back in the hard drive and how to stop from having to do that??
Would a configurable usb loader help with this problem
Hi I have a Problem I did what you said with my 320GB drive but when i did te step "delete volume"my drive is no longe in the list (wich I think is because I delted the drives software and th computer now no longer knows its an external drive) I still turns on when I plug i in and I can remove it savely but its no longer recodnized as a drive. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance Jim from holland.
Hi All,
I have followed the steps exactly the same as i was suppose to do.However when i was trying to load the Usb GX loader ,i got the following error "USB loader gx need unstubbed Cios222 v4 or cios249v9"However when i try to install Cios222 v4 it freezes. Can someone pls help on this?
What should I do if I want to use my external for more than just playing wii games?
what format does the games has to be
Let me start by saying, awsome site. You did a great job and very complete. But I am having trouble playing back ups from my external HD, it is a WD passport 3.0. Can you use a usb 3.0 external hard drive? It keeps saying that my device is slow, then cannot find usb device.
Great information.
This is a great hub. I already used your hub for softmodding, but this rocks even more. HD's are not that expensive anymore and it really is a great option if you have kids. DV's are scratcing but this is more child friendly. Thanks a lot man!
Hi Alucard,
Sorry for the very noob question but may I ask if 4.2 is almost the same with ver. 4.2U. I have a ver 4.2U wii and would like to install games to my HD. (BTW, I bought a soft mod wii a year ago with pre-installed games. Would like to add more games)
Thanks Bro and I hope you could give me an advice, googled and seen so many forums but you're the only one that gives simple yet effective instructions. Also, I would like maximize the use of my wii with homebrew stuffs.
Looking forward to hearing back.
Cheers,
Ray
Hello Alucard_1990,
Problems installing games onto the hard drive.
Games like: Lego-HarryPotter, ToyStory3, Planet51, Lego-IndianaJones2, Cars2, and more games.
Seems to freeze up during the transfer at different % rates. The Wd500GB PassportUSB shows solid light at the freeze. Installed games like: Megamind, DespicableMe, M&M's BeachParty.
My Specs:wii4.3, USBLoaderGX, WD500GBUSB, HomeBrew.
Any help would be great.
Thanks for the great posts.
mike
No not rented, very clean & scratch free.
The estimate time for the rip is about an hour.
Then it just freezes at a different %rate each time. 6% or 68% and so on.
I ripped 4 disks so far. I'll clean them again and give it a shot.
thanks
mike
I had usbloader gx working with my external and a wbfs partition, I had games running on it, but I loaded some more games on it and now I get a black screen every time I try to load any game. I've tried reformating with wbfs manager, I've even tried reformating in ntfs and then formating to wbfs to clean it up completely, but nothing has worked. I have a usb flashdrive still working with 2 games but it's only 2 gigs so a lot of games wont even fit on it by themselves. the harddrive has an ntfs partition on it too, but I have the loader set to multi-partition mode, and it worked like that before. Any ideas?
hi,
i have a western digital hard drive and everything was fine with it up until it got loaded onto a windows computer and got corrupted because it was being loaded onto my mac when it needed more games. now when i load games onto it and plug it onto the wii, nothing shows up and it says that there are no games. do you have any info on how to fix it?
Hi!
After i made a new partition of my HDD(now i have to partitions, one is in RAW,and another one is in NFTS format) But, i couldnt longer use WBFS manager to LOAD the partition where i put all my games. I get the message like: error occurred while loading driver. what should i do????
love ya bro!
Thanks for the help. Have it all up and running but how do you move between games via USB Loader GX. Do i have to press home on Wii remote and reset to select a different game.
Firstly, thanks for producing such a comprehensive guide.
I believe I've followed it correctly, but am having trouble with my first game installation where at around 10% it just stops. I'm using 4.2, white wii, and a new fast 8gB flash drive (before I prepare a biggish usb HDD) and a 2gB sd card with all your files installed. Hope you can advise.
Hi,
i have bought a western digital 320 gb passport external HDD. earlier i was using a usb flash drive to run game on my wii and it was running perfect. I have now transferred 20 games to my newly bought usb hard drive, it runs the games but after sometimes it freezes during running, it seems as if my HDD freezes or sleeps during play. I see a solid light at the HDD instead of blinking light whenever this freezing happens. Can you please advise me.
Firstly your the best, thanks. But and theres a but when I go to play my installed games I get stuck on a black screen? My wii is soft modded and the games I am installing are bali games. But this shouldnt make a difference should it??
When I clicked "delete volume" my hdd disappeared and i can't get my computer to detect it now!? I've tried every usb slot
I have softmodded everything successfully (i think) however when i go to run a iso game from usb i am stuck with a black screen, I have had a friend with his softmodded wii test the ISO for me and it works perfectly, what could be causing this?
Thanks!
I have yet to get a game working, however the ISO i had my friend test was new super mario bros, simply copied the ISO to the HDD and played it from default settings. So i'm assuming there is something else causing the black screen. Appreciate any help :)
have been using WBFS manager 2.0 to load the iso onto the WBFS formatted HD
I have tried multiple HD's, even bought one that specifically works with this version of soft modded wii, still no results. Have never tried ISOs on the Wii before now so unsure as to whether they worked, but legit CDs worked fine before the disk drive packed up
hi..
I'm having the same problem as someone else above. I have to unplug my HD every time I want to access the games list. Its not a huge issue but it is very annoying especially since I have to do it every time my kids want to change games. I have 4.3 u, Toshiba canvio 3.0 or 2.0 500 gig hd and its formatted to ntsf instead of fat32 (I think that may be the problem) any ideas on what I can do to fix this up?
Well i was looking everywhere to see if there was a way to directly take the games from my comp and put them on the external HD without having to burn 500 disks? It just seems a lot cheaper considering the price of disks and the size of games, and I'm just going from HD to HD anyways. waste of a DL disk if your just going to use it once.
I have a question i want to backup a burned copy of a wii game into a flash drive and an original, how do i go about doing this?
i needed to add games but its asking to format my HD and i can't afford to do that. what are my options?
tell it no ur pc will never read the hd once u format it with wbfs manager. when u open the manager it will read the hd.
Thank you for that tutorial. Amazing!!!

I am searching for the way to play my game stored in Hard Drives. Great Information.
